Daisy the Great is an indie pop band based in Brooklyn. The band was founded by Mina Walker and Kelley Nicole Dugan who originally met at NYU.[1]
History[edit]
Mina Walker and Kelley Nicole Dugan met at NYU Tisch. Originally they began collaborating on writing a musical about two folk musician buskers who assume the identity of a superstar pop duo. However, in the process of writing the musical, they scrapped it in favor of working on the songs they had originally written for the fictional folk pop group.[2][3]
By 2018, they released their EP, I've Got a Few Friends and I Wish They Were Mine, and the band grew to include members Barnardo Ochoa (bass, vocals), Justin Danforth (percussion), Sophia Sagan-Gutherz (vocals), and Brianna Archer (vocals) for their live performances.[4]
In February 2019, they released I'm Not Getting Any Taller, an editor's pick at Atwood Magazine.[5] Their music video for "Dips" off the album featured American actor, Brigette Lundy-Paine, who Walker and Dugan also met at NYU.[6] The same year they performed a live session including many songs off this album for record label Audiotree.[7]
In March of 2019 they opened for the Indigo Girls. In April of the same year they played for The Wild Honey Pie.[8][9] This was part of their national tour, which was covered by The Deli Magazine.[10]
Daisy the Great's 2020 album, soft songs, was recorded while the duo was quarantining due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[11]
Musicianship[edit]
On soft songs, Dugan recorded her vocals using the built-in microphone on her iPhone. It is also the first album that features Walker's own guitar playing.[12] Refinery29 described their sound as something akin to if, "Regina Spektor and The Moldy Peaches did a duet against a swelling, rousing orchestra."[13]
