Dan Milligan (born September 18, 1972) is an American drummer, session musician, music producer and remix artist. He is best known as the founder of the post-industrial/rock/punk supergroup The Joy Thieves, his work with dream-pop/alternative rock band The Burying Kind, and as half of the audio production team known as Joy Thieves Productions.

Music Career[edit]

Early Music Career[edit]

Milligan began studying drums when he was five, and began performing professionally in high school. He was the drummer for many Chicago-area original bands, including Perfect Isolation, Traveling Sky, Mary’s Window, Release, RPM, Urban Suburban Alliance (USA), Lovelies Bleeding, Charlie’s Pipe Dream, Bill Acuña & the Despotic Hall of Fame, and The Media Darlings. In 1996 he became one of the founding members of the stalwart Chicago-area dance/rock band, Libido Funk Circus; a band with whom he still performs.

During this time Milligan also did a lot of recording in the studio, which led to him working as a session drummer.

Between 2011-2018, Milligan released music under several group names including Lunation, Random Carbon Atoms, and Drownbeat.

The Joy Thieves[edit]

In 2017, Milligan formed the genesis for what would eventually become The Joy Thieves. The band began as a one-person musical project, but quickly ballooned into a giant musical collective whose members include current, former, and touring members of bands such as Ministry, Stabbing Westward, The Rollins Band, Killing Joke, Pigface, Revolting Cocks, <PIG>, David Bowie, Machines of Loving Grace, Marilyn Manson, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Naked Raygun, Foetus, My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult, Blue October, Pegboy, Nitzer Ebb, Die Krupps, White Zombie, and many more.[1] The band incorporates elements of industrial, industrial rock, hard rock, alternative, and punk into their music.

In 2019, The Joy Thieves signed a record deal with Armalyte Industries. [2] [3] Since then, the band has released one full-length album, three EPs, and two stand-alone singles on the London-based imprint. Their music can also be found on compilations for labels such as Cleopatra Records, COP International,[4] Furnace Records,[5] Riveting Music,[6] and Cave Dweller Music.

Remix work and Joy Thieves Productions[edit]

Shortly after the formation of The Joy Thieves, Milligan began doing remixes for other artists. He and his audio production partner James Scott have worked with artists such as Chris Connelly,[7] Consolidated, Skatenigs, <PIG>,[8] Blue Eyed Christ,[9] Der Prosector,[10] 13MG, DogTablet, Stoneburner, Sapphira Vee, A Covenant of Thorns, Death Pop Radio, and I Ya Toyah, [11]

In 2020, Milligan and Scott formalized their partnership by announcing the formation of Joy Thieves Productions; a company that does audio production, recording, mixing, mastering, and remixing.

The Burying Kind[edit]

In 2019, Milligan met fellow musician Scott-David Allen when The Joy Thieves did a remix for Allen’s one-man synthpop/darkwave musical project, A Covenant of Thorns. The two began working together, and in March of 2020 they officially announced the formation of a new shoegaze/alt rock project called The Burying Kind. [12] They released their critically acclaimed self-titled debut EP in March of 2021. The lead single, Falling Over, was chosen to appear on the very first installment of COP International’s compilation series, “Broken Hearts and Robot Parts.” [13]

Production and Session Work[edit]

In addition to The Joy Thieves and The Burying Kind, Milligan is a frequent contributor to other musical projects. Recent releases include Mary’s Window, Skatenigs, Blindcopy,[14] The Human Element, The Monday Machine, Melodywhore, and Jordanhorse.
