Music career
Dan Tomlinson moved from Phoenix, Arizona to Kansas City, Kansas when he was 13 and began taking drum lessons with Charles Day, who introduced him to the music of Elvin Jones and Tony Williams. By the age of 15, Tomlinson convinced his father to allow him to withdraw from school and practice drums for 8 hours a day. At 16, he joined the American Federation of Musicians and began his professional career.
In 1986, Tomlinson met Lyle Lovett and joined his band, performing on numerous television shows and at prestigious venues, including the White House twice. He briefly left Lovett's band from 1991-1993 to tour with Acoustic Alchemy, contributing to albums Back on the Case and The New Edge. Tomlinson rejoined Lyle Lovett and His Large Band in 1993 and continued touring until 2003.
Tomlinson's award-winning book, The World of Flams, was published in 1999 and is available through Alfred Music. He has taught drum set and percussion in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area and at Phoenix College. Dan currently works as a freelance musician in Phoenix, AZ, and has endorsements with DW Drums and Sabian Cymbals.
