Daniel McCarthy (born April 2nd, 1985) is an American businessman, real estate broker, and former political candidate. He currently lives in Glendale, Arizona, where he ran for Senate in 2020. He is the co-founder of The Makeup Eraser brand.

Early life, education, and career[edit]

McCarthy was born in Watertown (city), New York[1], the youngest of two brothers. During his childhood, his mother ran for local office and won, becoming the first woman to ever hold the position. Daniel still cites this event as the catalyst for his own interest in politics later in life.

At the age of 13, McCarthy began visiting his older brother at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona, where he was stationed. The change of scenery from New York inspired him to move to West Valley following his graduation from high school. It was here that Daniel met and married his wife Elexsis in 2004.[2]

Today, Daniel and Elexis reside in Glendale, Arizona with their four children Cadence, Daniel Jr., Emily, and Nolan, along with their two Boston Terriers, Paul and Penelope.

Early Career[edit]

In 2010, McCarthy and his wife merged their independent real estate brokerage into West USA Realty, eventually franchising the concept and opening 40 offices around the country. The firm went on to become the first in the nation in transactions per office and 13th in the nation for overall transactions. It has been listed as a top company in Real Trend Magazine, Realtors Digest, National Relocation, and Real Estate Magazine.[3]

In 2013, Daniel left the West USA Realty partnership, at which time it was ranked 16th in the nation in overall transactions per real estate company.[4] After the break, McCarthy went on to found his own real estate company, DeLex Realty, currently ranked 10th in Arizona. In 2018, DeLex merged with Mesa-based US Preferred Realty.[5]

Additionally, Daniel and Elexsis are the co-founders of The Original Makeup Eraser brand. In 2015, the company brought in revenue totaling $11 million dollars.[6] The brand is sold in several retailers, along with global direct sales.

“Last Home Standing” Television Show[edit]

In 2017, McCarthy’s real estate company DeLex Realty debuted their own reality show called “Last Home Standing.”[7] Daniel McCarthy served as host, Kathy Lawrence as executive producer, and featured realtors Slava Kosta and Terry Day as the stars who helped home buyers find their perfect home. The show ran for 3 seasons, for a total of 12 episodes.

The show originally aired on Cox 7, now YurView, with the site still hosting archives of past episodes.[8]

The most recent episode aired the week of November 23, 2019.[9]

Business Controversy[edit]

In January of 2019, McCarthy pledged to move all manufacturing for The Original Makeup Eraser out of China and into the United States. Despite these claims, which included a blog post published to the brand’s website on April 17, 2018 that has since been taken down,[10] an article in the Phoenix New Times found data that as of September, 2019, The Original MakeUp Eraser was still receiving shipments from Asian nations.

The article states, “... The Glendale-based company has received at least 16 shipments totaling more than 200,000 pounds from eight Chinese manufacturers in 2019…” and “According to customs data, MakeUp Eraser on September 4 received a shipment of towels totaling more than 5,000 pounds from Shijiazhuang Meienbang Import & Export Trade Company, a supplier based in Heibei Province in China.”[11]

The Original MakeUp Eraser came under fire again in 2019 after a civil suit was filed against the brand for allegedly “exposing consumers to di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP), a chemical known to cause cancer and developmental male reproductive toxicity.”[12]

Political Career[edit]

Running on what he called a “true Republican platform[13],” McCarthy joined the Arizona senatorial race following the death of former senator John McCain in 2018.[14] Following Arizona Governor Doug Ducey’s appointment of Martha McSally to fill the seat until the November 2020 special election[15] McCarthy was encouraged to run by his friends and family while looking to support a different Republican candidate to run in opposition to McSally.

In a February 2020 interview with Pinal Central, Pinal County’s largest paid circulation newspaper, McCarthy noted, “I was trying to find someone to run this race and it kind of backfired on me, because people started saying, ‘Well, you should be the one who does this’ and that voice grew.”

McCarthy’s grassroots platform, under the slogan “Demand Daniel,” was founded on key issues including support for a border wall between Mexico and the southern United States, travel restrictions between majority-Muslim countries and the US, elimination of the federal Department of Education, and the outlawing of abortion.[16] He also took an active stance supporting gun rights and opposing Arizona’s “red flag laws.”[17]

During the campaign, McCarthy hosted dozens of events and speeches across the state of Arizona, with his goal being to travel across the state by bus several times over. This project ended with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States at the beginning of 2020.

It was at this point that McCarthy’s platform shifted its focus to protesting the shutdown of Arizona, which caused job loss for 600,000 residents.[18] He participated in “Operation Gridlock,” an “offshoot of a controversial Michigan protest… tied to a group funded by the family of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos…”[19] He was also present for a gathering at the state Capitol in the lobby of the Executive Tower, where he criticized Governor Ducey for being unwilling to meet with them to discuss the reopening of the state.[20]

The Demand Daniel campaign went on to launch the “ReOpen Arizona” campaign, a “declaration to stop the shutdown on behalf of the citizens of Arizona, families, workers, and business owners.”[21] In the digital petition, it was noted that “the long-term economic damage is never factored into the decision making, nor is any analysis of this problem offered to the public,” along with the statement, “We the citizens are taking it upon ourselves to deem that the government mandated shutdown of Arizona’s economy shall end no later than April 30th, 2020 and the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness shall no longer be infringed on by the political class in the event that citizens take it upon themselves to reopen their lives effective immediately.”

The Arizona GOP Primary was held on August 4th, 2020 and resulted in a victory for Martha McSally, with Daniel bringing in a little over 20% of the vote.[22]

The Garret Lewis Interviews[edit]

During his time campaigning, McCarthy was interviewed three times on the Morning Routine with Garret Lewis.

On April 30, 2020, Lewis and McCarthy discussed their distaste for Governor Ducey’s “house arrest order” and his threats to arrest business owners for opening their businesses during the quarantine.[23] During the interview, Daniel opined that, “About 10,000 businesses across Arizona were threatened by a complete tyrant,” continuing on to say that “I [McCarthy] have sent personal emails via the backchannels that I have with the governor’s office, saying ‘Listen, I’ll make you look like a hero through this process… But you’ve got to stop being a tyrant immediately’.”[24]

The topic of the June 1, 2020 interview focused on the “communist/antifa movements, what he would do about the riots if he were the senator, and Mark Kelly wanting to take your guns.”[25] During his time on the show, McCarthy expressed that America was being thrown into an unprecedented, contentious time fought with “guerilla warfare” on the part of Antifa. Daniel also shared an anecdote where he was asked to teach a business entrepreneur class to 150,000 college students. According to McCarthy, “For every one person who wanted to participate... we had 20 people that said things that were so derogatory and so nasty, and when I say nasty, I’m talking emails that came back to me that said ‘Let the guillotines run red again,’ ‘Death to rich people,’ ‘Death to capitalism.’ I got so much hate coming from this group of college students, I literally went to the guy that asked me with the death threats… And said ‘Man, you have a ton of antifa, a ton of liberal people on your list.” McCarthy ended the story by saying that “liberals and antifa” attach themselves to conservatives to “see what’s going on, then attack it.”[26]

The final interview, which took place on August 11, 2020, the topic was McCarthy’s mission to “train conservatives to take over the Arizona Republican Party.”[27] Lewis took the opportunity to express his support for McCarthy, stating that he wanted to “get mad” about the state’s perceived misunderstanding of Daniel’s platform. Key discussion points included McCarthy’s stance on forced masks in private businesses and forced vaccinations, stating that there were plans for the state to use military force to impose these measures. McCarthy said that to combat this, he was “Mobilizing patriots together” and creating a “training academy for Conservatives to retake the Arizona Republican party.”[28]

Reopen Arizona Advocacy[edit]

It was at this point that McCarthy’s platform shifted its focus to protesting the shutdown of Arizona, which caused job loss for 600,000 residents.[29] He participated in “Operation Gridlock,” an “offshoot of a controversial Michigan protest… tied to a group funded by the family of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos…”[30] He was also present for a gathering at the state Capitol in the lobby of the Executive Tower, where he criticized Governor Ducey for being unwilling to meet with them to discuss the reopening of the state.[31]

The Demand Daniel campaign went on to launch the “ReOpen Arizona” campaign, a “declaration to stop the shutdown on behalf of the citizens of Arizona, families, workers, and business owners.”[32] In the digital petition, it was noted that “the long-term economic damage is never factored into the decision making, nor is any analysis of this problem offered to the public,” along with the statement, “We the citizens are taking it upon ourselves to deem that the government mandated shutdown of Arizona’s economy shall end no later than April 30th, 2020 and the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness shall no longer be infringed on by the political class in the event that citizens take it upon themselves to reopen their lives effective immediately.”

The Arizona GOP Primary was held on August 4th, 2020 and resulted in a victory for Martha McSally, with Daniel bringing in a little over 20% of the vote.[33]
