Darío Llanos Javierre (born December 23rd, 1987) is a Spanish-born international concert pianist, pedagogue and researcher. He is an expert on the work of the Hungarian Romantic composer and pianist Franz Liszt.

He is involved with several concert circuits on both sides of the Atlantic. In the year preceding the COVID-19 pandemic he had given over 100 recitals in concert halls in Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, France and United States.

Biography[edit]

Darío Llanos Javierre is currently based between Cartagena, Spain, and Dallas, TX, where he held a teaching fellowship in the College of Music at the University of North Texas for his Graduate Artist Certificate in Music Performance with Maestro Joseph Banowetz. He combines his performance career, both as a soloist and as a chamber musician with a research project of international repercusion titled "Comparative interpretation of Sonata, S178 and other piano works by Franz Liszt" for his Doctorate in Music and its Science and Technology at the Technical University of Madrid, in Spain, as well as the preparation of the recording of the entire piano works by Spanish composer Miguel del Barco for the Toccata Classics label.

Highlights and milestones[edit]

In 2014 he was awarded the first prize in the International Piano Prize organised by The Liszt Society in London for his interpretation of the Troisième Année of Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage. Since then, he is regularly invited by The Liszt Society, The Keyboard Charitable Trust and Master Musicians International to give series of recitals across England.

His outstanding acquaintance of Franz Liszt’s work was acknowledged again in 2016, being a prizewinner in the Los Angeles Franz Liszt International Piano Competition, and allowing him to give US premiere performances of works by the Hungarian composer.

He has performed in recital and as soloist with orchestra in Europe and in the United States, and was recently invited for the XX anniversary of the passing of Spanish pianist Esteban Sánchez to perform Jose Buenagu’s Rhapsody-Tribute (on pianistic themes by Esteban Sánchez), followed by Franz Liszt’s Concerto Nº2 in A major, S125, one of Sánchez’s favorites, in Badajoz (Spain) with the Orquesta de Extremadura.[1]

During the summer of 2018 he recorded Roger Boutry's chamber music works for piano and doble reed instruments with The Boutry Ensemble and some members of Dallas Symphony in París for UTA Records.[2]

For his work at the University of North Texas College of Music, he was nominated for the 2019 Award to the most outstanding Teaching Fellow at University of North Texas.

He has premiered works by Alexander Tchaikovsky (Director of the Composition Division of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory), Kuzmá Bodrov (Associated Professor in the Composition Division of the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory), Manuel Seco de Arpe (Head of the Composition department at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid at the time) and Diego Ramos (violinist and composer at the Ensemble Modern, Frankfurt).

Education and training[edit]

In his formative stage, he studied with Maestro Jacobo Ponce at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid. He specialised in contemporary piano repertoire with renowned pianist Sebastián Mariné, and deepened his study of harmony and improvisation with Emilio Molina. In 2010, he graduated achieving the highest possible grade: Matrícula de Honor.[3]

Since then, he has continued developing his understanding of music and its approach through the piano, attending courses with Leslie Howard, Roy Howat, Daniel Pollack, Peter Frankl, Murray McLachlan, Steven Osborne, Carlo Grante, Steven Vanhauwaert, Arpad Bodó, Pascal Devoyon and Rikako Murata.

Under Maestro Joseph Banowetz's guidance, he made a two-year stay at University of North Texas (Texas, USA) after being accepted into the prestigious and exclusive Graduate Artist Certificate program, which he completed in 2019. Simultaneously, he obtained his Master's Degree in Research in Music at Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, Spain.

Along with his performing career, Darío Llanos Javierre has been deeply committed to pedagogy, graduating in 2013 at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid in Piano Pedagogy as a second degree, obtaining the highest marks. He has been a member of the Keyboard Department at the College of Music of the University of North Texas, largest college of music in the United States of America, as well as the Piano and Harp department at the Escuela de Música Creativa in Madrid, Spain[4]. His many professional endeavours allow him to be in touch and collaborate actively with many other educational institutions, such as Technical University of Madrid and University of Texas at Arlington.
