Biography[edit]

Early life[edit]

DiCenso grew up in the Boston area of Massachusetts in a musical family. His father was a drummer and owned a drum shop of his own. Dave's brother, who was six years older than him, played piano as well. Dave grew up banging around on his father's kits for the first few years of his life. At the age of five, Dave asked his father for lessons. He had a hard time concentrating on the lessons for the first five years or so. He spent much of his time playing sports and playing along to his favorite LP records by artists like Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, and Kiss (band) instead of practicing his lessons. After five years of drum lessons, Dave stopped studying with his father and started taking guitar lessons. At age fifteen, drums came back into DiCenso's life and haven't left ever since. Dave started up lessons again with his father, taking them more seriously this time. That same year, played his first professional gig, and officially started his career as a professional musician.[1]

Music career[edit]

After high school, DiCenso had the opportunity to study privately at the Drummer's Collective in New York, where he studied with top drumming teachers, including Kim Plainfield, Rod Morgenstein, Pete Zeldman and Zach Danziger, to name a few. After mostly playing Heavy Metal for years, these teachers introduced DiCenso to many other styles of drumming.[1]

Within a year of leaving The Collective, DiCenso was touring and recording as a sideman. At the same time, he was studying with jazz drummer Gary Chaffee, who introduced DiCenso to the sounds of jazz drummers like Tony Williams, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Cobb.[1]

Since then, DiCenso has played and worked with artist ranging widely in genre—from hardcore to jazz, fusion to pop, rock music to R&B. He has recorded and toured with artists such as Duran Duran, Hiromi, Josh Groban, and John Petrucci. DiCenso has been also been featured artist at major percussion industry events like the N.A.M.M, the Modern Drummer Festival,[2] and the Montreal Drum Festival.

Dave has published two books called Rhythm and Drumming Demystified and Universal Rhythms for Drumset.[3]

DiCenso endorses Zildjian cymbals,[4] Vater sticks,[5] and Remo drumheads.[6]

Life at Berklee[edit]

DiCenso is currently an Associate Professor of Percussion at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.[1]
