David Evans Shaw is an American entrepreneur, investor and activist. He is the founder and CEO of Black Point Group and founder of IDEXX Laboratories in Maine. In a 2021 article, the Portland Press Herald described him as “a prominent business and social entrepreneur whose global leadership has led to the creation of more than a dozen successful technology companies, Shaw’s adventurous spirit stands as an inspiration to the young creative minds of Maine.”[1] Shaw is also known for his public service, as well as his support of the arts and environmental stewardship[2]
Education[edit]
Shaw attended the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1973.[3] He earned his MBA from the University of Southern Maine[4] in 1976.
Early Career[edit]
He began his career in public service, working in Maine Governor James B. Longley’s administration and then realized he preferred the world of business.[5] He then helped to build a Boston-based consulting firm specializing in food and agriculture[4] called Agribusiness Associates.
Entrepreneurial Career[edit]
David Shaw founded IDEXX Laboratories in 1983, and served as CEO and Chair until 2002.[6] IDEXX is a publicly traded leading animal health diagnostics company with revenues of $3.3B in 2022.[7] David Shaw was also the founding CEO and Chair of Ikaria Holdings, a human pharmaceutical company. Previously Shaw served as a partner at the venture capital firm: Venrock.[8]
Public Service[edit]
His career has included public service in science, arts, conservation and public policy. He was chairman of the board at Jackson Laboratory,[5] treasurer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), was a trustee of the National Park Foundation, founded the Second Century Stewardship Program for America's National Parks,[9] is a founding trustee of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum,[10] founder of the David E Shaw & family Sculpture Park at the Portland Museum of Art,[11] and is on the advisory council of Sustainable Harvest International.[12]
He was a founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance, is a Patron of Nature at the International Union for Conservation of Nature,[13] and a member of Ocean Elders.[14]
In 2021, David founded the Shaw Innovation Explorers Program at the University of New Hampshire, an entrepreneurial student fellowship program.[15] In that year he founded similar programs at the University of Southern Maine[16] and the University of New England, the Shaw Innovation Fellow Program.[17]
