Dean Browning
Dean Browning is an American business executive and politician who was a Lehigh County Commissioner and a former Republican candidate for the US House of Representatives. Browning describes himself as a proud pro-life and pro-second amendment Christian conservative, and is an ardent defender of Donald Trump. He was born in Kentucky and received a masters degree in industrial management, and later held executive level positions at Coca-Cola, Harvell Plastics, and New World Aviation. He lives in Whitehall Township with his wife Cheryl Browning.[1]
2018 & 2020 Congressional campaigns[edit]
In the 2018 midterm elections, Dean ran in the Republican primaries to represent Pennsylvania's 7th district. In the primary, he faced Marty Nothstein, an American cyclist. He lost 15,923 to 16,241 or 49.5 to 50.5[2]. Again in 2020 Dean ran to represent Pennsylvania's 7th district. This time, he faced Lisa Scheller, the former chairwoman of the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners. In the election, he attacked Scheller for her business dealings in China, and attempted to portray himself as a Trump ally, but ironically, President Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy endorsed Browning's opponent.[3] He lost the primary 27,260 to 29,673, or 47.9 to 52.1.[4]
Twitter scandal[edit]
On November 10th, Browning, who is white and married to a woman, tweeted from his verified Twitter account "I’m a black gay guy and I can personally say that Obama did nothing for me, my life only changed a little bit and it was for the worse. Everything is so much better under Trump though. I feel respected – which I never do when [D]emocrats are involved."[5] This caused users to speculate that he was using a fake account to influence the views of minority voters. After he noticed this mistake, Browning deleted the tweet and issued an explanation, saying "Regarding the tweet that is going viral from my account — I was quoting a message that I received earlier this week from a follower. Trump received record minority votes & record LGBTQ votes. Many people won't say it vocally, but do in private."[6] When that explanation did not suffice to some users, they launched an investigation and discovered that the account Browning supposedly quoted from was named "Dan Purdy"[7], who had a history of racist and sexist comments. Shortly after this was discovered, "Dan Purdy" tweeted out two videos[8] explaining that he was not a "sock puppet" and was indeed a real person.[9] In a strange twist, it was discovered that "Dan Purdy" bore a strong resemblance to Patti LaBelle's son, William Holte[10].[11] Twitter later suspended this account.
