Deb Crowfoot is a member of the lineage of the renowned and historically significant peacemaker and warrior Chief Crowfoot (1830 – April 25, 1890) or Isapo-Muxika (Blackfoot Issapóómahksika, "Crow-big-foot") of the Siksika First Nation. [1] Dr. Crowfoot is the second Indigenous dentist to practice in Canada, and the first in Western Canada. Currently, he is a leading Canadian dentist, providing surgical care to those in need in two major cities, including underserved communities on First Nation reserves. He is one of ten children, each with multiple degrees and notable accomplishments.
He completed his undergraduate studies at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah; then earned his doctorate from a top US dental school, the University of Washington. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation produced a documentary about the importance of the Crowfoot family and their historical significance in Alberta and the prairies, including Dr. Crowfoot and the family's present-day activities. [2] Upon graduation, Dr. Crowfoot dedicated himself to improving the oral health of others and enhancing their self-esteem, self-worth, and confidence through beautiful smiles, especially for those who might otherwise lack access to dental care.
To this end, he relocated to Tucson, Arizona, for further training, then returned to Alberta, Canada, and opened a clinic on the Siksika Nation Reserve. In support of Dr. Crowfoot's efforts, the Siksika health centre built a state-of-the-art dental clinic. [3] After establishing the Siksika clinic, Dr. Crowfoot expanded his services to three additional clinics in Onion Lake, Maskwacis, and Saddle Lake.
Dr. Crowfoot embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. While attending dental school, he started his own house-painting business to support his family and education expenses. After graduating and succeeding with his clinics, while practicing dentistry at the Maskwacis Health Centre, he founded a medical device manufacturing company. This venture stimulated the local economy, creating employment opportunities and providing orthotics for individuals with diabetes, neglect-related foot problems, and other illnesses affecting foot health.
Beyond his dental career, Dr. Crowfoot is a successful businessman. He was one of the investors who brought a professional basketball team to the City of Edmonton, the Edmonton Energy. [4] He is also co-funding "Apps for Life," a series of free mobile apps that provide users with health and well-being information, co-chairman of Outgrown My Stuff Dot Com, a free online marketplace for buying, selling, trading, or giving away children's items; and a provider of medical and educational advice from accredited professionals. In his commitment to education, Dr. Crowfoot sponsors scholarships for non-profit organizations, including the Canadian Aboriginal Science & Technology (CAST) program, and other scholarships to support Aboriginal people pursuing health-related education.
