Decora is a manufacturer and retailer of made-to-measure window blinds, window shutters and awnings and sometimes referred to by its holding name Mzuri Group. In 2021 Decora was listed at position 70 in the top 100 businesses by Belfast Telegraph.[1] It employs over 1,100 people with over 950 operating from their headquarters in Lisburn.[2] According to the website of their holding group Decora manufacture over 50,000 blinds every week. The company’s head office is in Lisburn, Northern Ireland while manufacturing facilities are spread across Europe with facilities in Lisburn, Birmingham, Huddersfield, Lithuania and Netherlands.[3]

History[edit]

Early History (1979 - 1999)[edit]

The company was established in 1979 by Michael and Lynda Dickson, who were featured in the 2019 Irish Rich List.[4] According to the timeline of their holding company, they began with Dutch Canopy's and Folding Arm Awnings that were targeted at the Northern Irish market and by 1989 the company had expanded its business to service the southern reaches of Ireland. In 1993, Stuart and Russel Dickson, the sons of Michael and Lynda Dickson, joined the business and still work there today in senior roles.

Recent History (2000 - Present)[edit]

In 2001, Decora moved their head office into the 330,000 square foot facility in Knockmore Hill Industrial Park, Lisburn, stating on their website that it was to help the company expand. This office remains their headquarters to this date. By 2007, the company continued to expand with a 30,000 square foot facility that was purpose built to produce their Sunwood brand of blinds.

To match an increasing demand for their blinds, Decora opened doors to their Birmingham wholesale hub in 2014 to offer next day delivery throughout the whole of the United Kingdom. Shortly after, Decora were praised for creating 80 new jobs in Lisburn by Jonathan Bell who was at that time the Enterprise, Trade and Investment Minister. Stuart Dickson, who at that time was the Managing Director, stated that their growth over the prior five years had been consistent. In 2015 they reached revenues of £46.8 million, an increase in 19.4% sales on the previous year, with 2014 seeing a similar increase of 20.6% increase in turnover.[5][6]

In 2018, Decora Blinds Systems registered Mzuri Group Holdings, to enable an acquisitions growth strategy. This became possible in June 2020 when they received £10 million investment from the Business Growth Fund and has led to numerous acquisitions since then.[7][8][9]

Acquisitions[edit]

Since launching Mzuri Group Holdings in 2018, Decora Blind Systems have acquired a total of 9 new businesses from across the world and including a combination of online retailers and manufacturers. Their first major acquisition was a 60% stake in Domus Lumina, a Lithuanian manufacturer and retailer worth £10 million.[10] This was quickly followed up by other acquisitions including UK retailer Swift Direct Blinds, Dutch retailer 123 Jaloezie and Swedish retailer Max Gardiner.[11][12][13]

At the start of 2021, Decora continued their growth through acquisitions by acquiring TCMM Shutter Group.[14][15] This was then followed up by several acquisitions throughout 2021 of UK retailer Tropical Blinds, international window blind manufacturer Vako, UK retailer Make My Blinds, and Australian retailer iSeekBlinds.[16]
