Lt Cdr Deepak Agarwal, VrC is a former Indian Navy officer who was decorated for his gallant actions and exemplary leadership during IPKF deployment in Sri Lanka in 1987. As the Commanding officer (CO) of SDB T-56 he was tasked on the night of 3 November 1987 to land Para commandos and other personnel in pitch darkness in uncharted waters. Despite heavy opposing fire he remained undeterred and ensured the success of operations.
Early life and education
Deepak Agarwal was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, on 5 November 1954. He did his schooling from St. Francis' College in Lucknow and from Daly College Indore where he was Government of India Merit scholar. Thereafter he did a Pre University Course from DAV College Chandigarh in 1969 wherein he came in the Punjab University Merit List. He joined the 44th NDA Pune course in July 1970.
Deepak was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 July 1974. He specialized in Communications and Electronic warfare in 1979. During his Naval Career he held myriad Operational and Staff appointments.
He took premature retirement and thereafter sailed as Master on Big Bulk Carriers around the Globe for twenty-five years.
He has now settled down in NOIDA and pursues his hobbies.

CITATION (Lieutenant Commander Deepak Agarwal)
Following the Indo-Sri Lanka Peace accord, operational necessity dictated the institution of joint patrols in the Palk Bay and on the Sri Lanka Coast to prevent the illicit movement of men and material. This extremely hazardous task was given to Indian Naval Seaward, Defence Boat T-56, a very small-sized ship with minimum facilities. The ship was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Deepak Agarwal.
The ship was deployed away from home base for long periods under severe constraints, during which water and rations had to be severely curtailed. Continuous vigil was maintained day and night, and this task intensified as the situation deteriorated, following violent action by LTTE militants.
Lieutenant Commander Agarwal showed leadership skills and courage of a high order. Despite adverse conditions, he motivated his men and executed the ordered task with exemplary tenacity and skill. On the night of 3 November 1987 at great personal risk, he landed para commandos and other personnel in pitch darkness in uncharted waters. Despite heavy opposing fire he remained undeterred and ensured the success of operations. [1][2]
