Shawana better known by her stagename Dirti Diana is a rap artist from Bronx, New York. Diana is notable for her freestyle rap career and her hip-hop releases. Diana has collaborated with artists such as Drag-On, Cory Gunz, Gunplay, Los, Phreshy Duzit and Uncle Murda.

Life and career[edit]

Diana was born in the Bronx, New York. Diana has cited her childhood experiences growing up in the housing projects of the Bronx as inspiring her to become a rapper. She has commented that she was surrounded by gang violence and had to struggle in her youth.[1] Growing up, Diana had a close relationship with legendary DJ Kool Herc, a family friend and hip-hop pioneer who she has cited as a major influence behind her musical career.[2] Diana began performing in freestyle rap gatherings while in high school, and eventually earned the nickname Dirti Diana which became her stagename Dirti Diana.

2012 - 2014[edit]

In 2012, Diana moved to Atlanta, where her musical style adopted Southern influences. Diana began collaborating with rappers King Los and Uncle Murda. Diana released her self-titled mixtape Dirty Diana in 2012, which was followed by G’d Up in 2013.[3] In 2013, Francis released her third mixtape R.I.P. To The Competition which included the single On This Side, featuring artists Cory Gunz, Phreshy Duzit, and King Los, whom she had previously worked with.[4] The Florida-based rapper Gunplay was featured on the track Turn Up Don’t Turn Down. On November 10, 2013, Diana released My Everything featuring Joya.[5]

2015 - present[edit]

Diana started her own label, Imperial Records, on September 11, 2015. Diana produced the single Trending with 808 Mafia, which was released on May 26, 2016.[6] Diana moved back to New York in 2017. On March 27 2017 Diana performed at B.B. King's NYC, for a show featuring DJ Kool Herc, Grafh, Mysonne and Chi Ali, among others. [7]

On October 24, 2018, Diana EP Popularity was released, featuring collaborations with artists Tarvoria, Ashilee Ashilee, and Syne.[8] Diana collaborated with fellow Bronx-native Drag-On on the single D-Rose which was released on May 3, 2019.[9] Drag-On appeared in the music video for the track which was released on May 8, 2019. Diana stated that the single’s title was inspired by basketball player Derrick Rose.[10]
