Kingston Hailu (better known as DJ Kingston, born 12 April 1992), is an Ethiopian DJ and a radio host. He was in a radio program named WezWez Addis which airs on 101.1 Bisrat FM.[1] He was awarded Best Radio DJ in 2018 and 2019. [2][3]
Early radio career[edit]
Kingston started as an associate producer in a local radio station in Ethiopia, 96.3 FM, on a program called Gojo Music. On 24 September, 2014, Kingston started producing and hosting the WezWez Addis program on Bisrat FM 101.1.[4][5]
The weekly “KERCHELEW” (in Amharic ከርቸሌው) Program shared the ideas and stories of inmates all across Ethiopia. The main motto was “Every Prisoner is Not Guilty” (in Amharic : የታሰረ ሁሉ ወንጀለኛ አይደለም). [6] This program alone brought many awards and highly boosted the shows ratings, giving it more acceptance all across the country.[citation needed] The phrase "Minm Madireg Aychalim” (in Amharic :ምንም ማድረግ አይቻልም) became a famous slang phrase by Kingston in the young generation in Ethiopia.
Early life[edit]
Kingston was born on April 12, 1992 to Hailu Leulseged (father) and Weynshet Gebire (mother) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He has two elder sisters, Helen Hailu and Rahel Hailu. Kingston is the last male child of the house.
Kingston fell in love with music in his teenage years. As he grew older he worked at a nightclub during the night, sleeping only for few hours.[7]
Personal life[edit]
Kingston currently lives in Addis Ababa his wife Rizvan Sileshi, an actress and a make up artist. They have a daughter named Tekta, who was born on 2 April 2019. Kingston named her after the great grandmother of St. Mary.[8]
