Synopsis[edit]
The movie begins with a postal letter, sent by Alex who is in New York, to Ammachi (his mother) being delivered to Mini by the postman Chandikunju. Uthuppu, Ammachi's unmarried brother who witnesses this, enquires to Chandikunju about the same, to which he replies that dollars were embedded in the letter. On hearing this, Uthuppu rushes to Ammachi's house. Alex and his brother Jose, who is also settled in New York has invited Ammachi to stay with them for a year. The letter also informs that Lucy, Alex's wife, is 7 months carrying. As Ammachi is all excited to leave to New York, Uthuppu requests her to send him some dollars for undergoing a treatment in Hyderabad for his illness (Asthma). The parish priest wishes her a safe journey and the members who had gathered there offer her several gifts, which were actually items that were to be delivered to their relatives who were in New York.
Both Alex and Jose along with their families travel to the airport in Jose's car. However, by the way the car broke down, and Jose had taken quite some time to get it repaired. When Alex and his wife Lucy mock Joseph to buy a new car, his wife Thankamma insults them to pay the cash that Alex debt them first. On hearing this, Alex get mentally hurt and he moves to a nearby bar. By that time Ammachi had got out of the airport and Vettukili Damodaran, an Insurance agent was there to give her a company. They take her to Jason's house, where a lot of people welcome her. Later, she came to know that they all came to take away the things that were given to here by their native members. Just before they leave, Thankamma informs Ammachi about the debt owned by Alex. Both Lucy and Thankamma had some ego among themselves. Ammachi asks Lucy for some dollars for sending to her brother Uthuppu, to which Lucy replies that they have spent quite a lot of money for her air tickets. So she will grant the money at a later date. Lucy tells Ammachi on her knowledge about Thankamani.
Vettukili takes Ammachi and Alex's kids for a glance at New York. Jose's elder son Tony and daughter Tiny were employed there. However, each had a girlfriend and boyfriend respectively. After few days, Ammachi was taken to Jose's house. Though Ammachi asks Thankamma also for the dollars, she too skips it quoting some silly reason. In the meantime, Lucy gives birth to a baby at the hospital and then Tiny and Ammachi rush to the hospital. As Ammachi takes leave from the hospital, she witnesses Tiny embracing her lover. She advises Tiny to refrain from such activities as it is not good for their culture. Thankamma visits Lucy and informs her that they will be the Godparents of the newborn kid, and that she was rude to Alex only for his good. Her words seem to hurt them prima-facie, however she was sure that it would motivate him to find some job and earn something. They also exchange the ego beliefs they had been keeping among themselves as if they were shared to them by Ammachi. This creates hatred in Lucy's mind against Ammachi.
Vettukili brings a marriage proposal for Tiny, however she is now a New York citizen and has different perspectives (not agreeing to the marriage concept). Tony also loses his girlfriend as she finds him to be a drunkard. After getting discharged from hospital, Lucy behaves very rude towards Ammachi.
