Atobaru Adedolapo Adam (born April 24, 1998), known professionally as Dopsy Flow, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer.[1] His music is a blend of Afropop, Reggae and Dancehall.

Early life

Atobaru Adedolapo Adam was born on April 24, 1998, in Lagos, Nigeria. He is from Ede local government of Osun state. He grew up in a Muslim household and he is the first son of his family. From a very young age, Dopsy Flow was passionate about music. He became fond of his mother's radio before his teenage years and would listen to it every time he came home from school. The more he listened, the deeper he fell in love with music. Soon after, he began to sing along to the more popular songs of the time, memorising the lyrics and learning the various accents. At age 12, he took music classes in school and began to hone his singing ability. He would practice whenever he was back in the school hostel, experimenting with different sounds while making up lyrics on the spot. Not long after, he began making a deliberate effort to write songs which he would then sing to his friends and ask for feedback. The feedback he got was generally positive.

During a crisis in school - when the school principal who was due to retire refused to go - Dopsy Flow wrote a song about the situation. He sang it to a few mates in the hostel who were so impressed by it that they told others about it. Before long, the song had spread round the school. It was at this point that Dopsy fully recognised that he had a talent he had to embrace. In spite of this, he was still unsure about doing it professionally because his parents expected him to focus on going to the university to study Engineering. He also didn't enjoy being in the spotlight and hated how it could put one in a position to be ridiculed. It terrified him.

While in the university, Dopsy met people with like interests and they encouraged him to take music more seriously. He began hanging around studios and recording music which he never released out of fear. Eventually, he discovered a studio close to his house and mustered the courage to tell his family he wanted to learn production. To his surprise, he got their full support and began his journey into music. He then joined forces with Owe Musik, a music production outlet based in Lagos. His stage name came from his friends who regularly called him 'Dopsy', a sobriquet coined from his name Dolapo.

Career

Dopsy Flow officially began his career in 2015.[2]

On September 14, 2016, he released his first track titled Morayo, a cover of Drake's Controlla.[3] On December 18, 2016, he released the video to the song on YouTube.[4] Not long after, he had an interview on Black Carpet Radio where he spoke about his early life, career, and artistry.

He kicked off 2017 with a feature on Choose, a track with Sho'Bamz and Shmokes. The track was released on February 14, 2017, as a Valentine's Day gift to fans.

In mid-2017, UK-based Nigerian singer Mordi Mod heard Dopsy Flow's Morayo and promptly got in touch with him seeking a collaboration. He came to Nigeria soon after, the collaboration with Dopsy being priority, and the song was recorded. On July 28, the track Skibo was released by Mordi Mod featuring Dopsy Flow and Sho'Bamz.[5][6][7]

In the summer of 2017, Dopsy Flow took part in the FESTAC Summer Music Tour and was named amongst the top 20 acts. He was named Act with the Best Personality.

Dopsy Flow and Sho'Bamz collaborated again on another track titled African Version, a cover of Luis Fonsi's Despacito, which was released on YouTube on August 12, 2017.[8] Directed by Remite A. Pictures, the video garnered over 1,500 views. This was the first Dopsy video to get over 1000 views on YouTube. Dopsy and Sho'Bamz also released a cover of DJ Khaled's Wild Thoughts.[9]

On November 30, 2017, he released his second solo single titled Confusion, a cover of Mr Eazi's Leg Over.[10] He released Samiyata with Young Vik soon after.[11]

On February 28, 2018, an Owe Musik-produced track titled Forbes (Olowo Aye) was released featuring Dopsy Flow, Dreycoded, Sho'Bamz and Rehogod.[12][13][14]
