Doris Brendel is an Austrian singer and songwriter who lives in the United Kingdom.

Brendel plays flageolet (Irish whistle), acoustic guitar, tenor saxophone and electric violin and is the daughter of concert pianist Alfred Brendel.[1] She has been signed to Sony,[2] Virgin [3] and London Records [4] and has to date released 17 albums mostly on the Sky-Rocket Records label.[5][6][7]

Background

Doris Brendel was born in Vienna, Austria, 1 June 1966 to concert pianist Alfred Brendel and Iris Brendel (nee Heymann-Gonzala)[8] an opera singer and ceramic artist. Doris learned to play the violin from age 6 and was offered a placement at the Vienna Music Academy. She moved to London in 1978 and attended St Christopher’s boarding school in Hertfordshire where she formed her first band. In 1985 she attended Leeds University to study German, Russian, English and Philosophy.

Brendel's great-grandfather Hermann Weil was born to a German Jewish family who formed a German-Argentine business and became the largest grain trader in the world. Her uncle Felix Weil was a renowned Marxist.[9] [10] [11]

Career

Doris Brendel started by performing her songs with acoustic guitar whilst attending Leeds University. In 1988 she was asked to join local prog band ‘Telefunken78’ which later turned into ‘The Violet Hour’ and signed to Sony's Epic Label in 1989 [12]. The band released 2 singles ‘Falling’ and ‘Could Have Been’ and 1 album ‘The Fire Sermon’ in 1991 and they supported artists including Nils Lofgren, John Farnham and Marillion on tour [13]. In 1993 the band split due to creative differences. [2]

In 1992–3 Brendel formed an acoustic combo consisting of Brendel on acoustic guitar with 3 female backing singers (originally including Sam Brown) with her brother Pete Brown on guitar and regularly featured in London venues including the Borderline and the Jazz Café, as well as on GLR and local radio stations. Brendel also sang and played flageolet on Sam Brown’s album 43 Minutes.

In 1994 Brendel produced a 7-track EP with band Holy Cow which was funded by Polygram A&R man Russ Conway.

1996 Brendel signed deal with London Records for a dance single which was released under the name of ‘Asha’ with ‘JJ Tribute’ [4]. John Brand (producer & manager - Waterboys, the Cult, Stereophonics) managed the project [14]. This was followed by another Club single deal with Virgin Records, under the name of ‘Kyra’ and the single ‘Easy to Love’ in 1997 [3] [15]

Brendel featured on various sessions (Little Angels ‘I Want Love’[16]) and show bands touring the UK, including Sister Act, Buzz, Ladykillers and band Treacle formed in 2000 and still going today having played around 3000 concerts[17]

The Fire Sermon’ was rereleased in 2009 on Sky-Rocket Records as well as several albums of unreleased collections recorded throughout her career. The album ‘If’ consists of 20 songs recorded in 1992-3 with producer Pete Brown and featuring many musicians including Joe Brown, Alvin Lee, Herbie Flowers and Sam Brown.

Both Holy Cow and ‘The Acoustic Album’ featuring the acoustic combo from 1993 and recorded in 1994 in Joe Brown’s studio were released in 2009 along with a collection of new songs recorded with producer Dave Beeson and released under the name of ‘DB – Driving' originally recorded in 2003-4.[18]

2010 saw the release of a full band album project ‘The Last Adventure’ on the Sky-Rocket Label and produced by Dave Beeson [19]. The album received great acclaim. (Reviews and citations: [20] [21] [22] [23] [24])

Album ‘Not Utopia’ followed in 2012 and was produced by Lee Dunham, continuing the multi-genre theme of the previous albums. (Reviews and citations: [25] [26])

Upside Down World’ was released in April 2015, also produced by Lee Dunham and toured the UK with Wishbone Ash in October and November 2015. (Reviews and citations: [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] [32] [33])

Eclectica’ was released in May 2017, produced by Lee Dunham. (Reviews and citations: [34] [35] [36] [37] [38])

The band continued touring with Wishbone Ash and also with Fish from 2018 to present day. Brendel became Fish’s backing vocalist from Dec 2018.[39]

Album ‘Mass Hysteria’ was released 1st September 2020 again produced by Lee Dunham. (Reviews and citations: [40] [41] [42] [43]  Also reviewed in Prog Magazine, Fireworks and more.)

September 2020 also saw the release of Fish’s final album Weltschmerz on which Doris Brendel sang backing vocals.[44]

Brendel has also released 4 self-recorded ‘acoustic’ albums each featuring 10 original songs since November 2019 –‘Imaginary World’ (Nov 2019), ‘Glass House’ (Dec 2020), ‘Mirror Mirror’ (Nov 2021) and ‘Star Brightt’ (Apr 2022). [18]
