Omooba Oyedotun Onaopemipo Babayemi (born 5 December 1966).[1] is a Nigerian politician, businessman, and philanthropist. He is the gubernatorial candidate for the Osun State 2022 governorship election under the umbrella of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).[2] He is a native of Gbongan, Osun state.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Dotun Babayemi was born on 5 December 1966 to the family of late Oba (Dr) Solomon Babayemi and Ajoke Babayemi, His father was the 8th Olufi of Gbongan in Ayedaade Local Government Area, Osun State.[4] He attended St. Patrick’s Grammar School, Ibadan, where he completed his secondary school education. He proceeded to Ogun State University, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree In Law in 1989.[5]

Dotun Babayemi was admitted into the Nigerian Law School in 1989, and by 1990, he qualified as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. Babayemi attended London Business School where he did his Advanced business management program.

Career[edit]

Dotun Babayemi's illustrious career started upon being called to the Nigerian bar. He practised law briefly as head of chamber at the law firm of Babayemi & Co.[5] He then proceeded to the United Kingdom for a 7-year stint at London Underground Limited, leaving as a senior project manager. He later moved to the United States and spent ten years with AXA Financial inc. (a Fortune 100 business with $20 trillion in assets under management)[6], leaving as Vice President and Managing Director. Babayemi also served as Vice President of Technology Solutions Group.

In 2007, Prince Babayemi returned to Nigeria and joined Celtel Nigeria Limited as Director of Strategy and thereafter as Group General Manager for Northern Nigeria. He left the organisation in 2009 to establish his group of companies with interests in security solutions and telecommunications. His brainchild, Fort Knox Group , where he is CEO, currently has over 22,000 staff across West Africa.[1]

Political Career[edit]

Dotun Babayemi has been a visible player in the Osun West Senatorial District since 2011.[5] In the 2019 Nigerian Senate elections in Osun State, he was a candidate for Osun West Senatorial District contesting under the Action Democratic Party (ADP).[7][8][9][10] However, Babayemi could not realise his Senatorial ambition in 2019 in spite of his well thought out manifesto and demonstrated capacity to execute it, coming 3rd place in the polls.[11]

On 8 March 2022, Babayemi emerged the Peoples Democratic Party candidate[12] for the Osun State 2022 Gubernatorial election after winning the court-backed[2][13][14] and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola-led[15][16] Primary election exercise conducted at WOCDIF Center, Osogbo, Osun State.[17][18]

Philanthropy[edit]

Babayemi has been described as a selfless philanthropist,[19][1] most notably known for his Alaafia Dotun health initiative. The health initiative was designed to provide medical services for natives and residents of all Local Governments that constitute Osun West Senatorial District. Since 2017, no fewer than 350,000 constituents have benefited from Alaafia Dotun, with more than 45,000 Recommended Glasses distributed to beneficiaries.[5][19][20] Through his NGO, Favour, Kindness & Grace Foundation, Babayemi has been able to give back to the community in which he was raised.[19] Dotun Babayemi has also displayed a commitment to education, especially for Indigents but brilliant students, sponsoring them up till their university education.[5]
