Doug Sanders (born 3 June 1955) is a British musician. He was originally the guitarist and backing singer in the late 1970s/ early 1980s English mod revival band The Lambrettas. In 2009, he reformed a Lambrettas lineup as singer/frontman as well as guitar.

Early life[edit]

Sanders was born in Lewes, East Sussex. He was the second son of David and Daisy Sanders. His early life involved moving between racing stables at Lewes and Lambourn, due to his father’s work with horses. He spent his formative years in the company of older people who worked at the stables where he lived. By the time he went to secondary school he was back permanently in Lewes where he went to Priory School, Lewes and started playing in bands while he was there.

Music career[edit]

At the age of 14, Sanders's older brother made a guitar. He taught himself by listening to records and playing along to John Mayall, Peter Green and others of that genre. He went to two of the Jazz, Blues and Pop Music Festivals at Plumpton, East Sussex, and the bands he saw there inspired him to persevere with the guitar. He played in a few bands from around 1970 until he formed Shakedown with some contemporaries in 1977. They made one single called "F.B.I." in 1978. Jez Bird joined Shakedown after they recorded "F.B.I.", and he and Sanders started writing songs together. Sanders and Bird moved on to form The Lambrettas in 1979, with Paul Wincer on drums and Mark Ellis on bass. The Lambrettas released eight singles and two albums up until mid-1982 when they split from each other and The Rocket Record Company. Sanders and Bird went on to form a band called 'Rave on Jack' in 1982. They had acclaim on the live circuit but did not record anything, and split in 1984. From 1985 until 2009, Sanders was involved in various projects, but partly moved away from music. He recorded guitar sessions for some vinyl dance tracks on the Nuphonic label, along with various other guitar sessions. Sanders played some live gigs with an incarnation of The Lambrettas with Bird in the mid 1990s. They appeared on the Channel 4 morning TV programme The Big Breakfast on Thursday 30 March 1995. He also fronted a couple of local bands. 'The Poor Brave Things' (1988–1995), played original songs penned by Sanders, along with a couple of homages thrown in. 'Zen House' (2002–2009), played covers around Sussex.

Later work[edit]

Sanders reunited with drummer Paul Wincer in 2009 to play a one-off gig as The Lambrettas at a 'Modrophenia '79' event in Brighton on 15 August 2009. The band were well received and what was supposed to be a one-off gig inaugurated a return to touring. The Lambrettas have been touring the UK and Europe since then.

He appeared as one of the mystery guests on the BBC2 TV show Never Mind the Buzzcocks series 27 episode 7, which first aired on 4 November 2013. It was hosted by Rizzle Kicks with team captains Phil Jupitus and Noel Fielding, and was picked out of the line up by comedian Paul Foot.

Sanders went into the studio with The Lambrettas in 2016, to record three new songs and a cover of The Kinks song All Day and All of the Night. These were released as an EP called Go 4 It in 2017 on the Jet Age Records label. The three songs are called "No Reaction", "Go 4 It" and "Walk Away". This was recorded at Granary Studios in Kent, and he is planning to return there for a different project towards the end of 2019. Meanwhile The Lambrettas continue.

Sanders was inducted into the Brighton Music walk of fame in 2018 as a member of The Lambrettas.
