Downtown is a hip hop group based in Athens, Greece. It was formed in 2020 by Nume, Ηitchcock, Makeleiο (Makeliό, Greek: Μακελειό, [macieʎio]) and Azazel. The quartet has a multi national identity, since the group's members come from different countries. While it's not their sole source of unity, living in the center of the Athenian capital, is also their common source of inspiration.
Their music is heavily inspired by the everyday life in the city and in general, the living ways of the youths in the country.[1] Expressing a generation surviving in day to day jobs that grew up under austerity and oppression, political lines have a strong presence. Political messages are by far not limited, as you can very often listen to lyrics defending minorities and the working class.[2] Among others, non conforming lifestyle, hate against the oppressors and the ruling class and surviving in the metropolitan hostile environment are the main topics of the group's writings. The urban element is clearly dominant in the group's aesthetics, including track beats, artworks and video clips.[3]
Despite being new to the scene, they became notable for their fresh music, aggressive lyrical delivery and fast catchy rap flows, while their real life lyrics are highly appreciated by the listeners.[4] Their music and lyrics are heavily influenced by the group's multicultural background. Classic rap bass lines, coexist with ethnic samples, trap and drill beats are often used, all together composing a new -very welcomed- style of rap for the Greek hip hop scene.[1][3][5] Publishing singles in their early start, didn't stop them from having a fan base created, but their debut album "SHIT CITY", is what defined them and earned fans attention and respect.
