Dr. Deepak Narayan Amarapurkar[1] (born on 13 March 1959) is a Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist in Bombay Hospital,[2] Jagjivanram Western Railway Hospital[3] since 1994 & Breach Candy Hospital since 2015. Actively involved in a variety of research projects, his speciality is in Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C,[4] NAFLD and HCC. An MD, DM (Gastro), DNB (Gastro), Dr. Amarapurkar[5] is a Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology, Fellow Of Indian College of Physicians , Fellow of American Gastroenterology Association & Fellow of American Association Study of Liver. Till date, he has presented around 200 papers, authored around 400 publications,[6][7] both singly as well as in collaboration with other fellow doctors and has imparted his contribution in more than 20 chapters in a range of text books.[8] He has also authored,[9] edited[10][11] and reviewed[12] several books and journals[13] on clinical Hepatology[14] liver cirrhosis, hepatic encephalopathy, improving survival in decompensated liver cirrhosis and vascular disease of the liver.

Education and career[edit]

Dr. Deepak Narayan Amarapurkar[15] has passed his MBBS degree from Dr V M Medical College[16] Solapur, Shivaji University,[17] completed his MD - Internal medicine from Dr. V M Medical College[16] Solapur, Shivaji University[17] and received Gold Medal for the same examination, DM - Gastroenterology from T N Medical College, Mumbai, Bombay University and DNB - Gastroenterology from National Board, New Delhi. He has delivered 10 prestigious orations like Netaji Oration - 2010, Dr Madangopalan Oration – 2013 & P N Chuttani Oration – 2015 and has served as a Treasurer, Secretary & Vice President of Indian National Association of Study of Liver.

He is a member of the consensus panel on Management of Hepatitis C, Hepatitis B, NAFLD and HCC for Asian Pacific Region. He is a guide for Ph.D. programme in life science in Bombay University and programme director for Diplomat of National Board in Gastroenterology. He has authored a monogram on Care of patients with cirrhosis. He has been a guest editor of special issues on hepatology and interventions in gastroenterology of Bombay Hospital Journal and Improving survival in patients with de-compensated liver cirrhosis by International Journal of Hepatology.

He recently completed research projects on Vedolizumab in inflammatory bowel disease,[18] Genetics of Chronic Pancreatitis, JAK2 mutation in abdominal vein thrombosis, Association of genetic variants with anti-tuberculosis drug induced hepatotoxicity, Genetics of celiac disease, coagulopathy in liver cirrhosis and surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma; currently involved in research on Genetics of fatty liver disease and other liver diseases, portal hypertensive changes in Upper gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Deepak[19] has Delivered more than 550 lectures at various International (APASL, APDW, IASL, AASLD, World congress of Gastroenterology, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian and Philippine Association of Hepatology/Gastroenterology) & National meetings & conferences (IMA, API, ISG, INASL, Indian society of Nephrology, Association of surgeons of India, Indian Association of Paediatrics, Indian association of Pathologists and Microbiologists)

Personal life[edit]

Born to Narayan Narhar Amarapurkar[20] and Sudha Narayan (Dravid) Amarapurkar in 1959 in Solapur, Maharashtra, Dr. Deepak[21] got married to Anjali Subhash Mhaskar[20] on December 12, 1987. The couple has two Children by the names Pooja Amarapurkar[22] who is pursuing her Fellowship at Miami, USA and Rohan Amarapurkar who is pursuing his Electrical Engineering at VJTI, Mumbai, respectively.

1. Received Keshawrao Balwantrao Gore Prize for standing first in M.D. (Med) examination of Shivaji University 1985.

2. Received Best Resident Award for excellent academic and clinical work performance at B.Y.L. Nair Charitable Hospital & T.N. Medical College 1988-89.

3. Received Best Paper Award for “Effects of Isosorbide mono-nitrate on portal hypertension” at annual conference of the Indian Association of Study of Liver 1990.

4. Received “Himalaya Gold Medal” for best clinical paper presented at the annual conference of Indian Association of Study of Liver 1991 for the paper “Hepatitis C virus infection in chronic liver disease”.

5. Received Best poster Award at the annual conference of Indian Association of Study of Liver 1992, for the poster “Budd-Chiari Syndrome due to inferior venacaval obstruction”

6. Received first prize for Hepatobiliary quiz at mid-term conference of Indian Association of Study of Liver 1992.

7. Recipient of Young Clinician Award for 10th World Congress of Gastroenterology 1994.

8. Recipient of Young Investigator Award for Asia Pacific Congress of Gastroenterology 1996.

9. Recipient of Young Investigator travel award for Asia Pacific Congress of Hepatology 1998

10. Best paper award at annual conference of INASL 1998 “Balloon angioplasty for inferior vena caval obstruction"
