Guruvayoor Dr. T. V. Manikandan is a Carnatic Musician and Vocalist. He currently works as professor in Faculty of Music and Fine Arts, Delhi University. He is the founder president of Rasikapriya[1] - a not for profit charitable organization aiming towards promoting Indian Classical Music and arts.

Early Life[edit]

Hailing from a family of musicians, Manikandan was initiated into music at the age of four by his grandfather Sh. Kadatthanaadu Govindan Nambisan. Later he came under the tutelage of Sri Trippunithura Viswanatha Bhagavathar and gave his debut performance at the age of nine and subsequently got trained by Sri Trissur P. Radhakrishnan. He holds Masters in Music and M. Phil. from Delhi University and has done extensive research in Carnatic Music under the guidance of Padmabhushan, Sangita Kalanidhi, Prof. T. N. Krishnan. He received “National Scholarship” from the Department of Culture, Government of India, to sharpen his ability by further training in music from Prof. T. N. Krishnan.

Career[edit]

He is the chief editor of the ISSN accredited International journal on Classical Music SANGITKA. He authored several articles and books, on music, viz The Laksana and Laksya of Carnatic Music – A Quest[2], Glimpses of Carnatic Music[3], Music of Krishnanattam and released several musical albums of light devotional songs and classical music, which are highly acclaimed by listeners and critics. His Audio CD - Swathi Smrithi, Volume 1 & 2[4] - a collection of rare Swathi Thirunal compositions was released. He has also released devotional songs Panchamrutam, and Shambhujumaram. He has the credit of presenting Sri Krishna Leela Tarangini, a 17th Cent. prabandha at the behest of Dept. of Culture, Government of India. Directed and presented a unique musical ensemble with 64 artists called Naada Laya Pravaham, for Janasamskrithi’s Keralolsavam, Nov.2011 New Delhi. He was invited as the cultural ambassador and gave performance at the First India Festival held in Durban, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg and Pretoria in South Africa and in the Grand finale jointly hosted by I.C.C.R, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India and Government of South Africa. He periodically gives consulltaions for the mental disorders and suggests certain experiments and exercises related to music and allied therapies for holistic development of children especially in the group of adolescents.[5]
