Driveways is an American pop punk post-hardcore band from Saugus, Massachusetts.[1] The group was formed by members Pat Finnegan, Ryan Passariello, and Derek Serino.[2] Despite not being signed to a label, the band has over 160,000 monthly listeners on Spotify as of 2021. According to their 2020 Spotify Stats, Driveways had 5.1 millions streams and over 258,000 hours played from over 643,000 listeners in 92 countries.[3]

In April 2020, Alternative Press named Driveway’s album Night Terrors on their list of 20 Underrated Pop Punk Albums from the 2010s.[4]

History[edit]

Pat, Derek, and Ryan were friends growing up in Saugus, MA. After being in multiple different bands/projects, the trio came together to form Driveways in 2015.[5] In a 2021 interview, Pat explains the story behind the band's name:

"The name Driveways, it's not really a fun origin story or anything, but, Ryan and I used to sit in the car and listen to demos a lot from some of our old projects...like he would drop me off back at my house and we'd be in front of my driveway...so that's why we call the band Driveways."[6]

In 2016, Driveways released their debut EP Side Mirror online, followed by EP The Sky Seems Closer. The band rose to prominence in 2017 with their punk renditions of popular hip hop tracks XO Tour Llif3 and Old Town Road.[2] Shortly after, they released another EP, Night Terrors (2018). The EP and its lead single “Drop Dead” was celebrated as "a great introduction to the Boston natives’ ability to change paces and keep their sound refreshing."[4] Driveways then went on to release two additional EPs: Skeletons (2019) and Epilogues (2020).

Their first full length album, October Forever (2020), was recorded over the summer of 2020 and released on October 30th, 2020. In February 2021, the album was released on Vinyl and all 100 copies were sold out within an hour.[6]

Musical Style and Influences[edit]

While the band’s most notable influence comes from Blink-182,[5] Driveways blends elements of mid-2000s pop punk, post-hardcore, emo-pop, rap, and contemporary rock music. In 2020, Finnegan wrote of their style:

I think our sound kinda developed naturally over the past few years.  Ryan and Derek were in heavier post hardcore bands growing up and Ryan and I had a few projects before Driveways that had pop punk elements.  We’re always trying to blend pop punk with post hardcore and balance the heavier elements of our music with catchy melodies. ... Musically we’re a three piece so a lot of our songs are built from arpeggiated guitar riffs and stuff that sounds good when we play in a room together.  Derek brings a lot of the heavier elements into our music and Ryan’s drumming always shapes our sound especially on our past few releases.[2]

During an October 2020 interview, the band talked about their first full length album October Forever:

We tried to take certain songs in a heavier post hardcore direction and other songs in more of an indie/emo direction.  We definitely experimented with some different ideas but I still think we made an album that sounds like our band.  We tried to connect the songs together with some lyrics and themes related to October.[7]
