Drunknmunky is a urban and street clothing brand currently owned by Tigerleash.[1] The company was founded in 1999 in Los Angeles and is based in the UK. The brand manufactures Polo shirts, Zip Hoodies, Logo T-shirts, Caps, Beanies and Denim wear. Tigerleash's parent company The Source licensed the use of the brand worldwide.
History[edit]
Founded in 1999 in Los Angeles, the brand was created by two US students who wanted to offer something more individual then other brands such as sports. The brand is based on the philosophies of the ancient kung fu style in an attempt to awaken the drunken nature of any willing individual. The brand was financed by Korean conglomerate Samsung and its turnover within just two years from zero was US$90 million (£64m) in the US. [2] By 2006 and still selling in the UK, the brand was languishing in the shadow of more ambitious brands and was sold through more then 25 accounts. Less than 36 months later, that number had catapulted to 350, of which 160 are independent accounts. At the Dutch young fashion trade show ModeFabriek in 2006 the brand opened 42 accounts in just two days. In 2009 the brand made sponsorship deals with the DMC World DJ Championships, the MOBO Awards and Sony. Originally a T-shirt and jerseys brand, like most nonessential manufacturing in the UK, it redirected its production to manufacture a wide variety of items. by the mid 2000's the brand had more then 80 pieces, with 40 seasonal styles including jeans, jackets, lumberjack and denim shirts, jumpers, hooded tops and shoes.[3]
Marketing[edit]
Drunknmunky's ethos was for those who are not afraid of being themselves. There branding was aimed at people who wanted to break free from the system of mass-market, uninspiring brands dictating what is to be worn season upon season. With the campaign that individuals are looking for a brand which gives them freedom to exist with their own choices of lifestyle.[4]
Collaborations and brand ambassadors[edit]
In 2009, Sony signed with Drunknmunky to endorse its brand by offering an exclusive CD which was given out as a gift with purchases.[5]
