Dudi Kalish

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Dudi Kalish (Hebrew: דודי קאליש‎; born September 4, 1978) is a singer, composer, conductor, arranger, and producer of Hasidic Jewish music.[1]

Biography

Kalish was born in Bnei Brak to Avraham Yaakov and Yehudit Kalish, Belzer hassidim. He is a younger brother of composer Shlomo Kalish, and Belz Choir conductor Alter Meir Kalish. He studied in a Belz Cheder and Yeshiva.

Music career

Kalish left Israel to study music in New York. After returning to Israel, he began writing Hassidic vocal music records. His first recordings were adopted by the ultra-Orthodox radio stations for the period between The Three Weeks and the Counting of the Omer, when according to Jewish Halacha, instrumental music isn't played.

In 2007, Kalish produced a rap music album with Chaim Shlomo Mayesz, covering well-known songs by foreign gentile singers translated into Yiddish. The album caused a protest by the ultra-Orthodox rabbinical establishment, and an ad against it was published in the Hamodia and Pashkevil.[2]

In 2008, Kalish produced a CD that was distributed in 15,000 copies and was included free of charge in the "Haredi World" weekly, for the Belzer Rebbe's grandson. The CD mistakenly had secular Israeli music, including female singers (kol ishah). There were angry reactions, which were directed at the creators of the disc, though they were not responsible for the mistake.[3]

From 2010 onwards, Kalish returned to producing original Hasidic music only. Kalish performs as a singer and conductor of extended orchestras at Hasidic celebrations and gatherings.

Kalish is married, the father of several children and lives in Bnei Brak.
