Duo con Spirito is a flute-guitar chamber music ensemble that was formed in 2015. It consists of Matei Rusu and Polychronis Karamatidis.

Biography

Polychronis Karamatidis was born in 1995 in Thessaloniki (Greece). As a young flautist he was awarded, among other prizes, the First Prize of the Summer Music Academy Competition of the State Conservatoires in Volos (Greece). He began his orchestral activity in 2011, performing with various orchestras including the Youth Symphonic Orchestra of Greece, Con Fuoco Orchestra, Amikejo Orkest and Detmolder Kammerorchester. Throughout the years he took part in masterclasses with renowned flautists such as Peter-Lukas Graf, Samuel Coles and Philipp Jundt, among others.

Matei Rusu, born in 1994 in Iasi (Romania). During the years, he has performed as a soloist, as a member of several chamber music ensembles and also as part of an orchestra. In 2019 he won the GFF (Gesellschaft der Freunde und Förderer) Förderpreis and in 2020 the GWK Musik Förderpreis. Matei Rusu has followed masterclasses with well-renowned classical guitarists such as Judicael Perroy, Zoran Dukic, Martha Masters and Alex Garrobe, among others.

The two musicians finished their Bachelor's degrees at Conservatorium Maastricht, where they studied under the guidance of Prof. Philippe Benoit (Flute) and Prof. Carlo Marchione (Guitar). After that, they followed their master’s programme in chamber music at Hochschule für Musik Detmold with Prof. János Bálint (Flute) and Prof. Thomas Kirchhoff (Guitar).

Musical Projects

During the last years, Duo con Spirito developed several interdisciplinary projects.

  • Astor Piazzolla - Libertad in Tango (awarded the Third Prize in the Musik & Vermittlung competition organized by Hochschule für Musik Detmold) was dedicated to the development of Tango through the eyes of Astor Piazzolla.[1]
  • Stories of Le Chat Noir combines poetry, acting and music. It focuses on the music of Erik Satie.[2]
  • Klänge hinter dem Stacheldraht presents music and literature written in the Nazi concentration camps.

Other activities

In 2018, the duo was awarded a scholarship to participate in the Research-Led Performance Workshop in Venice where they studied in depth the interpretation of contemporary music for flute and guitar.
