Dwi Koendoro Brotoatmodjo (Banjar, 13 May 1941 -South Tangerang, 22 August 2019 at the age of 78) was an Indonesian cartoonist, illustrator, director and animator, known especially for the comic strip work of Panji Koming which was published in the Sunday edition of the Kompas newspaper.[1]

Early life[edit]

Dwi Koendoro was born on 13 May 1941 in Banjar, West Java, as the second of six children to father R. Soemantri Brotoatmodjo, an engineering engineer, and mother to R.R.  Siti Soerasmi Brotopratomo, a bridal makeup artist. He grew up and finished his elementary school in Bandung, West Java.  After completing junior high school in Surabaya, he continued his education at the Indonesian Fine Arts School studying in Painting in Yogyakarta, and then studying in graphic illustration at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI) Yogyakarta.  He was unable to complete his studies due to the outbreak of the G30S incident.

Career[edit]

In 1965, he joined the Surabaya Television Experiment Agency, which was a joint In 1965, he joined the Surabaya Television Experiment Agency, which was a joint project of Televisi Republik Indonesia and Indonesian Navy. According to him, while working there he learned a lot about graphic illustration. In 1972 he worked in Jakarta as an illustrator and cartoonist at the publisher PP Analisa and then Stop and Senang magazine.

In 1976 he started working at PT Gramedia as an illustrator, and in 1979 he was assigned to PT Gramedia Film as head of production and then head of audio-visual. There he has worked as a screenwriter, storyboard artist, editor, and even director, both for commercials and documentaries. At the suggestion of his senior, cartoonist G.M. Sudarta, Dwi Koendoro made the comic strip Panji Koming, which was published in the Sunday edition of Kompas since October 14, 1979. This comic is set in the Majapahit era which he uses as an analogy to criticize social and political conditions in Indonesia.

Death[edit]

Dwi Koendoro died of a stroke in august 22 2019[2]
