eSam (Persian: ایسام‎), is an online auction and retail marketplace in Iran, similar to eBay.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] The website is free to use for buyers, and charges sellers a percentage of the sale price.[10][11][12][13]

History

The auction website launched by Iranian computer engineer Sam Modonpour in 2012, who decided to create a similar system in Iran at the suggestion of his sister, based on his experience selling 3,000 products including repaired laptops on eBay.[1][2][14]

The initial version of the website was launched in January 21, 2012 and provides C2C services to Iranian users via its platform.[10] eSam, has introduced Iranians to Internet auctions.[2][15]

In the first 2 hours of eSam's activity, the first purchase, which was a pantyhose, was registered, so that the order processing and delivery process took 3 days.[16]

Statistics

In September 2019, the founder of eSam said that more than 1.8 million goods have been sold so far, 40% of which are second-hand goods.[17]

Challenges

Since the beginning of the company, due to the complete lack of confidence of the Iranian people in online shopping and limited access levels, this company has faced a major crisis. Due to the strict rules of Internet activity in Iran, eSam was hardly able to get permission to hold online auctions and so far, it has had little success in gaining the trust of buyers so that it has not been able to attract sponsorship.[18]

According to Modonpour, they are currently working on a service that allow to order products from eBay and Amazon through eSam.[19]
