Ebola virus and soccer

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ebola virus and soccer is about the impact of the Ebola virus disease and the related Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa. In 2014, it was noted that Ebola epidemic has disrupted the African cup.[1] Soccer has been described as way to improve people's mood in the face of the ebola epidemic.[2]

In 2014 the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia, Liberia was converted into an Ebola treatment unit.[3] On 24 July 2014 Liberia suspended all football activities.[4]

In July the Seychelles Health department blocked the football/soccer team from Sierra Leone from coming in to play qualification match for the Africa Cup of Nations. [5] This came at the cost of Seychelles forfeiting that match and Sierra Leone advanced.[6] The Africa cup of Nations is known as the biggest soccer/football match in Africa.[7]

Morocco asked to delay the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations due to Ebola, and then pulled out from hosting it entirely.[8] They are still planned to host the Club World Cup.[9] The Africa Cup of Nations is beiennial 16-team soccer match for Africa.[10] After this the CAF searched for a new host for the event.[11] Equatorial Guinea took over as the new host for the event.[12] Equatorial Guinea was previously barred from the competition, but was allowed back in after they became the host, while Morocco, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Guinea are barred from the cup.[13]

In early August 2014 Sierra Leone cancelled league football (soccer) matches because of the Ebola epidemic there.[14]
