Eghosa E. Osaghae is a Nigerian professor of political science. He is the eleventh substantive Director-General of Nigeria's foremost foreign policy and international affairs Think Tank, the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, and was previously Vice-chancellor of Igbinedion University, Okada.

Early life and education[edit]

Osaghae obtained his first degree in political science in 1979, his Master's in 1981, and Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science in 1986, all from the University of Ibadan.[1]

Career and personal life[edit]

Osaghae was the 2017 Van Zyl Slabbert Professor of Politics and Sociology at the University of Cape Town and the 2014 Emeka Anyaoku Visiting Chair of Commonwealth Studies[2] at the University of London. His Anyaoku Chair Inaugural Lecture, “A State of Our Own: Second Independence, Federalism and the Decolonisation of the State in Africa,”[3][4] in April 2014 became the first inaugural lecture by a Nigerian in history of the University of London. He was the Leader of the Ford Foundation-funded Programme on Ethnic and Federal Studies, Director of the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of Ibadan,[5] and chair of the university's Senate Curriculum Committee.[1]

Between 1994 and 1998, Professor Osaghae was the Head of the Department of Political Studies at the University of Transkei, South Africa.[6] Osaghae contributed to a project sponsored by Peace Research Institute Oslo PRIO with the publication "Human Rights and Ethnic Conflict Management: The Case of Nigeria."[7]

He is a tenured professor of political science at the University of Ibadan and he delivered the 464th inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan titled “what man has joined together: ethnicity, federalism and state politics.[8] He served as Chair of the Panel on Quality Assurance Assessment, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, 2011-2012, and served on the Steering Committee of the Consortium for Development Partnerships, a successful model of North-South intellectual collaboration that involved institutions from North America, Europe and Africa between 2005 and 2012.[1] s. He was the Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier private University, Igbinedion University, Okada, for a record of fourteen years (2004 – 2018).[1] He was a guest speaker at "The Platform", an annual national discourse gathering organised by the lead Pastor of the Covenant Christian Centre, Lagos.[9]

He was appointed Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA in March 2021.[10][11][12] Osagahe is married to Dr. Veronica Osaghae and they have four children and grand children.[2] He is an ordained Reverend of the Anglican Church, Benin, Nigeria.[13]

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies, STIAS, and the 2019 Claude Ake Chair at the Uppsala University, Sweden.[14][15] Also a Visiting Professor/Fellow/Distinguished Senior Scholar at the Carter Centre of Emory University USA (1989), University of Liberia (1989/90), Salzburg Seminar, Austria (1993), University of Cape Town South Africa (1994), the Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala Sweden (1994), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (1999, 2000), Northwestern University USA (2002, 2004), University of Cambridge UK (2003), a number of universities and research institutes in India (2005, 2009), Dartmouth College USA (2005) and Yale University USA (2009). He was a Rockefeller ‘Reflections on Development’ Fellow (1989/90), and a MacArthur Fellow.[1]
