Elias Habib Lahoud (الياس حبيب لحود) is a Lebanese author and poet, born in 1941, in Marjeeyoun (مرجعيون).[1] He has received his elementary education at the Nuns school in Jdeidat, then he continued his secondary education in the public school of Saida. He went after to the Lebanese University and earned a BA in Arabic language and literature.

Early life[edit]

[2][3] Ever since he was a 9-years-old, Lahoud began by composing poems in French, some of which are: My town overlooks the forest of pine, Raises dams in the face of the breeze, Denies that its limits dictate you, etc...

At the age of 10, he wrote "the vertical poem", and later moved on to free poem at 13.[3]

After some time, he became one of the most famous “Poets of the South”. Throughout his career, Lahoud sheds light on the South of Lebanon in his poems, describing its nature, poverty, traditions, and many of its issues.

He is known for his ability to express his ideas smoothly and to present his thoughts easily. This what makes his poems special. He writes so comfortably that sometimes he exceeds the usual level of comfort and ease required and goes as far as using humor and sarcasm.

He took a part in different Arab and national poem festivals. The drawback could not beat him in 1967, so he published his diary “And we built the dam”, and, so they say, his sun never set through the evening.

He never gave up on his friend. In his prime, he wrote “Marathi Pazolini”, along with his verbal collection, and his Persian poems, and the “Terrace Poems”.

He is nationally one of the five stars poets and one of the southern poets, one who made an astonishing appearance since the invasion on the south until its independence.

He is valued as one of the journalistic cultural references, due to his participation in establishing the most prestigious magazines; The Arab Thoughts and The Contemporary Arab Thoughts, and has been editor in chief since 1989.

Up until he established with his magazine friends contemporary books that he has been editing since the late 1980s till this time.

He is also an editor, edition supervisor, and the editor of his own magazine: Contemporary Books, which includes between its ends the contemporary and the modern, which makes it a space for acculturation.

Nationally, he can barely find an announcer so it keeps publishing. They say "He knocks on the doors of the past, evoking the mixed and the different, consulting a debate".

He builds on a novelty that does not differ from authenticity. One of the most popular fighters for a writer's health and social guarantees, all because it is said he remembers that some worthy writers in their final age stages didn't have money for medicine. He took of the writers union from his post as secretary.

He was honored by Shahriaed Forum, under the auspices of the Lebanese Ministry of Culture. The event took place at The Golden Tulip Hotel in Beirut on 11 June 2019. A researcher called Raghda Korban presented a "critical study" of him and his poems, and Charbel Touma gave a speech about the topic as well.[4]

[2] Throughout his life, Elias Lahoud has tried using multiple attempts to keep papers and books around. He did so by creating his own paper and magazine and never agreeing to step down from his editor-in-chief position for the sole reason of not trusting anyone to do the same thing he will. He believes that Arabs, unlike the western countries, misused the technologies we hold and social media. He believes that our golden age was pre-technology for a reason, and that it is doing more harm than good in our societies. In a 2017 interview on Tele Liban[2] he said:

  • "Arabs did not succeed in investing in technology like the westerns did"
  • "There is not enough time to discuss this issue as far as I would like"
  • "There is a reason why Pre-technology days were our Renaissance days"
