Eliexer Marquez Duany, artistically known as El Funky de Cuba, born November 14, 1981 in Havana, is a Cuban rapper, singer-songwriter and one of the composers of the song Patria y Vida.[1]. The Cuban artists Yotuel, Gente de Zona , Descemer Bueno and Maykel Osorbo[2] collaborated on the rap track Patria y vida, which won the Latin Grammy for song of the year, months after it became an anthem for anti-government protests in Cuba. The song also won a Latin Grammy for best urban song[3]. It was released in February 2021, after which it amassed more than six million views on YouTube. The title “Patria Y Vida” (“homeland and life”) is a bitter play on “patria o muerte” (“homeland or death”), a popular slogan associated with the rise of the communist leader Fidel Castro in the late Fifties.[4]
