Elijah Chinezim Onyeagba (born 2 September 1977) is a Nigerian economist, banker and politician who has served as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Burundi since 2021.

Early life and family[edit]

Onyeagba comes from Awoovu village, Enugwu Ukwu of Anambra state into the family of late Apostle Raphael and Mabel Onyeagba.[1]

Education[edit]

Onyeagba graduated from the University of Nigeria with a degree in economics, Nsukka, Enugu state. He subsequently earned several postgraduate degrees, including a Master's Business Administration (MBA) in Finance from the University of Calabar, Master's in Applied Economics from the American University, and a PhD in Economics (Public Policy) from Atlantic International University.[2]

Banking career[edit]

Before his appointment he worked some financial institutions in Nigeria including Equatorial Trust Bank (now Sterling Bank Plc), Bond Bank (now Skye Bank) and Platinum Bank (now Keystone Bank). Also as Group Head of Real Estate Transaction at Aso Savings & Loans Plc, one of Nigeria's mortgage banks situated in the federal capital territory and he later worked with the Nigeria Securities, Printing and Minting Plc, a subsidiary of the Central Bank of Nigeria as Head of Commercial (Marketing & Sales), Northern Operations.[1]

Political career[edit]

Onyeagba is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under which he contested for the Federal House of Representatives Anaocha, Dunukofia and Njikoka federal constituency in Anambra state in the 2019 general elections, which was won by the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).[3][4] [5] He was appointed to served as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Republic of Burundi by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2021 after successfully confirmed by the Senate of Nigeria.[6] [7] [8]

He is a fellow of Archbishop Desmond Tutu Fellow of the African Leadership Institute, Senior Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (HCIB), a Fellow of the Institute of Treasury and Financial Administration (FITFA), a leader with the Crans Montana Forum.[9] and also an alumnus of the International Housing Finance Program and Securitization of the Wharton Business School in Pennsylvania.[10]

Recognition[edit]

Onyeagba was named among Nigeria's "Under 50 Leaders in Public Service" in 2021 by Blueprint and Vanguard.[11] [12]

Philanthropy[edit]

In 2019, he sponsored free medical outreach for 10,000 people in his hometown in Anaocha, Njikoka local government in Anambra state and both aged individuals and children received treatment of specialized cases of nose, eye and throat illnesses, pediatrics, urology, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, dentistry, malaria, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and typhoid. Participants also received eye glasses and mosquito nets.[13][14]
