Elizabeth J. Shapiro is an American lawyer who currently serves as deputy director in the civil division of the Federal Programs Branch of the United States Department of Justice. In May 2019, Shapiro was nominated by President Donald Trump to a 15-year term as an associate judge on the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Her nomination is currently pending before the United States Senate.[1] On January 3, 2021, her nomination was returned to the President under Rule XXXI, Paragraph 6 of the United States Senate. Her nomination was resubmitted later that same day.[2] Her nomination was referred to the United States Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Shapiro received her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. After law school, she clerked for Stephen Eilperin of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Shapiro began her career at the Office of the Solicitor in the U.S. Department of Labor.[3] She has served in the U.S. Department of Justice since 1991. In 2001, Shapiro was named to the Civil Division's Terrorism Task Force. She has also served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Texas.[4]
