Ellen Y. Zhang

Ellen Ying Zhang is a Chinese philosopher at Hong Kong Baptist University and is its current Head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.[1] She also serves as the Director of the Centre for Applied Ethics at Hong Kong Baptist University[2] and the Chief Editor of the International Journal of Chinese and Comparative Philosophy of Medicine published by the Centre for Applied Ethics.[3]

Education and career[edit]

She is an alumnus of Rice University where she completed her doctoral studies in 1995 under Edith Wyschogrod. Her dissertation was on "The play of negativity: an exploration of an apophatic discourse in Daoist philosophy and negative theology".[4]. She later taught at Temple University before joining Hong Kong Baptist University[5] where she currently serves as the Head of the Department of Religion and Philosophy. She represented the Buddhist point of view at the 7th International Bioethics, Multiculturalism and Religion Workshop in 2019 organized by the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights, in partnership with Foundation Cultures du Monde and the Fondation de la Mosquée Hassan II.[6]
