Emmett Corcoran, journalist
Emmett Corcoran, circa September 2014

Emmett Corcoran is an Irish journalist, and the former editor of The Democrat[1], a regional newspaper which served the Shannon-side counties of Roscommon, Longford, and Leitrim. [2] In March of 2019, Corcoran was diagnosed with cancer. [3] In March of 2020, Corcoran announced he was restarting his career in the media with the launch of a new podcast. Details of the podcast are scarce, at present. [4]

In April of 2019, Corcoran came to national prominence when An Garda Síochana seized the newspaper editor’s mobile phone, in order to identify his journalistic sources.[5] He has brought a legal challenge which is currently before the High Court, and An Garda Síochana has been restrained by the High Court from accessing the mobile device, in the interim. [6]

Prior to his career as a journalist, Emmett Corcoran worked as Parliamentary Assistant to Michael Fitzmaurice TD, a member of the Irish Parliament (Dáil). [7] He held this role from 2015 until 2017. In mid-2018, Corcoran withdrew from politics completely, despite having previously contested the 2014 Roscommon-South Leitrim Bye Election. [8] He cited corruption and the spreading malicious rumors about him and his family as the reason for his withdrawal. In the 2020 General Election, Corcoran continued his support for his former employer, Michael Fitzmaurice.
