Empire loyalism, or imperial loyalism and, to a lesser extent imperial continuation, is the ideology that the British Empire should be re-established and continued. It is a form of British nationalism. One of the founding groups of the ideology was the League of Empire Loyalists (LEL), founded by A. K. Chesterton in 1954. The LEL was a 'pressure group' which was opposed to the dissolution of the British Empire.[1] Imperial continuation is closely linked with British Unionism; only differentiating on the subject of the continuation of the entirety of the imperial realms, rather than just the British Isles.

Imperial loyalism itself was first coined by Sir Étienne-Paschal Taché, a Canadian politician, in 1848 with his famous idea of affirming French-Canadian loyalty to the British Crown. However, the term 'Empire loyalists' was first used by Guy Carleton, 1st Baron Dorchester, the governor of Quebec and Governor-general of British North America, to Americans who resettled in British America during or after the American Revolutionary War.[2] These settlers were simply referred to as 'loyalists' but where given an honorific title - United Empire Loyalists. Today, it is not recognised by the Canadian honours system.

In Ontario, the traditional loyalist stronghold of Canada, 'United Empire Loyalist Day' was passed in 1997 legislation.[4]
