Empire of Luxembourg

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Empire of Luxembourg was a short lived state established in 1256 by Henry V of Luxembourg, upon his ascent to the title of Count of Namur.[1][2] Henry proclaimed himself King of the Romans in the popular tradition of his time, as the Holy Roman Empire was in a state of interregnum without a clear emperor. He then proceeded to attack the nearby domain of Liège. This infuriated the other states of the Holy Roman Empire, who, allied with the Bulgarian Empire, tried to subdue Henry's imperial ambitions. Henry was soon defeated by Kaliman Asen II, then emperor of Bulgaria. Henry was allowed to retain his lands in Luxembourg if he swore to revert his "empire" to its former status as county and cease his country's expansionist policies.[2]
