Eremitageløbet

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Eremitageløbet (The Hermitage Run), also known as the E-Run, is an annual running event that takes place in Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen in the beginning of October.[1] The first run was in 1969, and it is said to have been the inspiration of many other large running events in Denmark.[2] Since 1983 the route has been 13.3 km long.[2] With about 17,000 participants it is the second largest one-day running event in Denmark, beaten only by the “Eventyrløbet” (The Fairytale Run), which typically has a couple of thousands participants more.[3] This year, the run took place on Sunday, October 6th at 11 am.[1]

History[edit]

Inspired by the cross-country ski race Vasaloppet in Sweden, the cardiologist Peter Schnohr, the former athlete and printer Richard Larsen, and the dentist Svend W. Carlsen initiated the run with help from the daily paper B.T. The first run took place in 1969.[2]

In 1969 there were a little more than 2000 participating men and women. During the first 46 runs, a total of 600,000 participants have crossed the finish line.[4] The run has been the inspiration for more than 900 running events in Denmark, and one of the reasons why there were about one million runners in Denmark in 2009, whereas there were only about 10,000 in 1969.[2]

The run takes place on the first or the second Sunday of October every year and since 1989, when a new record in number of participants was set, there has been a limit of 19,000 participants – a limit that is usually met a month or two before the run. This limit was set for the sake of the traffic around Kongens Lyngby and the wildlife in Dyrehaven. About 15,000 spectators are watching the run along the route.[4]

The oldest running event in Denmark is the Søndersøløbet in Viborg, even though the Eremitage Run and the Risskov Run near Aarhus are often mentioned as the oldest ones. The run in Viborg took place the first time in 1910[5], and the Risskov Run in 1914.[6]

Route[edit]

On the route, the runners pass the Hermitage Hunting Lodge twice.

In 1969 the route was 12.1 km long. From 1970 to 1982 it was 13.8 km, and since 1983 the distance has been 13.3 km.[2] The route of 13.3 km is shaped like the number 8. Along the route, the runners pass Dyrehavsbakken, the house of Peter Liep and twice on the route they pass the Hermitage Hunting Lodge, where there are nutrition- and aid stations.[7]

Organisation[edit]

The Eremitageløbet is organized by a co-operation between Københavns IF (Copenhagen Sports Association) and Københavns Skiklub (Copenhagen Skiing Club). In 2018 B.T. withdrew from the co-operation, but they continued to be the media partner of the run.[2]

The board members of the race are:[8]

Chairman: Thomas Ringsted, Københavns Idræts Forening (KIF) (Copenhagen Sports Association)

Vice chairman: Anders Melamies, Copenhagen Skiing Club

Nis Maybom, Københavns Idræts Forening (KIF) (Copenhagen Sports Association)

Jakob Ghisler, Copenhagen Skiing Club
