Athletics[edit]

USA Track & Field (USATF) Masters Track and Field has held a National Indoor Track and Field Championship meet every year since 1975 (except 2020). The meets have included stars, records, and competitive competitions.

USA National Masters Indoor Track and Field Championship[edit]

Through the efforts of David Pain, Masters Track and Field began in 1968 [1]. The first indoor championship competition was held March 2, 1975 [2]. The 1975 meet included Masters athletes age 40 and older [3]. The meet has continued until today (with the exception of 2020) [4]. The 2019 meet included a complete set of running (sprints, middle distance, and long distance), hurdles, race walk, and field events (high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put, and weight throw), and relays [5].


The 1976 meet included Bob Backus, Bud Deacon (Masters Hall of Fame) [6], Boo Morcom, and Phil Mulkey as competitors [7]. The 2000 meet included Kathy Bergen, Bill Collins (athlete), Ralph Maxwell (athlete), Bruce McBarnette, Nolan Shaheed, and Cliff Wiley as competitors. The 2000 meet also included Philipa Raschker multi-time record holder and multi-time National Champion. The 2018 meet included centenarian record holders Orville Rogers and Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins [8].
