Athletics[edit]

The USATF Southern California Association is one of the largest associations within the USA Track & Field (USATF) organization. Several Olympians, Record holders, and James E. Sullivan Award recipients have been from the USATF Southern California Association [1]. Hundreds of track and field Clubs belong to the Southern California Association [2].


USATF Southern California Association=[edit]

USA Track & Field (USATF) organization supports athletes, coaches, and officials in the running of Track and Field meets [3].

USA Track & Field is composed of 56 associations [4]. USA Track & Field (USATF) is the United States organization for Track and Field and is broken into seven different regions [5].

Every athlete that joins the USATF becomes a member of both an USATF association and an USATF region [6].

USATF Competitions includes Track and Field, Cross Country, Marathons, Road Races, Race walking, and Ultra [7]. Southern California Association provides training for coaches and officials. [8]. [9].

December 2014 the USATF National Convention was held at Anaheim, CA [10]. One of the topics is measuring of the field events with Laser Measurement Technology [11].

The 2020 Annual So Cal Conventions was held Virtually [12].

Starting in 2020, Virtual training is now available for USATF Level 1 Coaching [13].


Notable Southern California Athletes=[edit]

The following are some of the Southern California Track and Field (Athletics) stars: Oct 8, 2020 USATF Florence Griffith Joyner (Olympian) was selected by fans as the winner of the 28th USATF Throwback Athlete of the Week award [14]. The Southern California Association has had many stars over the years. Willie Gault has set Masters World Records in the 100 and 200 meter dash [15], Parry O'Brien was an Olympian and set World Records in the Shot Put. Ryan Wilson (hurdler) was a bronze medal winner at the 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final and had a successful professional athletics career. Allyson Felix has won many medals in the Olympics, World Championships, and as a professional athlete. Additional athletes and coaches through the Southern California Association include Carl Lewis, Evelyn Ashford [16], Jim Bush, Gary Carlsen, Maurice Greene (athlete), Rafer Johnson, Bob Kersee, Bob Larsen, Brenda Martinez, Dalilah Muhammad, Gil Roberts, Brianna Rollins-McNeal, Bob Seagren, John Smith (sprinter) [17], Steve Smith (pole vaulter), Larry Stuart (athlete), Milan Tiff, and Ron Whitney.


James E. Sullivan Award recipients from the Southern California Association include: Florence Griffith Joyner, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Edwin Moses, Parry O'Brien, Carl Lewis, and Mike Powell (long jumper).


USATF Southern California Association and Region[edit]

The USATF Southern California Association area (USATF SCA Association) counties include: Inyo, Los Angeles, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura. The SCA office falls under the West Region (AZ, CA, HI, NM, and NV) [18]. The Association competitions includes Youth, (High School), (Collegiate), Open, Elite, Masters, and Para Athletes [19].

SCA USATF Association formerly was referred to as Southern Pacific AAU, SPA-AAU, and TFA Pacific [20].


So Cal Jim Bush Championships (Southern California Open & Elite USATF Championship) meet[edit]

The So Cal Jim Bush Championships (Southern California USATF Championship) meet was named after athlete and National Track and Field Hall of Fame track and field coach, Jim Bush.
