Ernst Dieter Berninghaus (born March 19, 1965 in Pulheim, Germany) is a German-Swiss manager and entrepreneur. Since 2016, he has headed the Executive Board of Signa Holding and is also Chairman of Signa Retail Holding.[1]
Life and education[edit]
Berninghaus graduated in business administration and received his doctorate from the University of Cologne in 1990. Today, he teaches digital transformation and business innovation at the University of St. Gallen.[2][3]
Since 2015, Berninghaus has held Swiss citizenship, too.[4] He is married and the father of five children.[5]
Career[edit]
In 1991, Berninghaus joined the executive staff of Metro Holding in Baar/Zug, Switzerland, working primarily for Erwin Conradi, Metro's chief representative. In the course of the IPO, he headed internationalization and corporate policy for several years. He was also a member of the supervisory board of several subsidiaries.
In 1999, Berninghaus joined the management of the German Rewe Group. In 2001, he was appointed to the Management Board, where he assumed responsibility for international business and e-business. In May 2004, Berninghaus succeeded Hans Reischl as CEO of Rewe. In the same year, he was forced to resign following investigations connected with the acquisition of the Internet company Nexum.[6][7]
Berninghaus then became an advisor to Philippe Gaydoul, head of Swiss discounter Denner, then the number three national retailer in Switzerland.[8] In 2007, he moved to the board of directors of Rast Holding, Denner's parent company.[9] After the Migros Cooperative Union took over Denner, he became Chairman of the board.[10] In 2008, he became the first foreigner ever to become a member of the general management of the Federation of Migros Cooperatives and head of the Retail Department.[11][12] This division included Denner, Depot, Digitec Galaxus, Ex Libris, Globus, Interio, m-way, Migrolino, Migros, Office World, and the online retailer LeShop.ch.
On September 1, 2016, Berninghaus took over as Chairman of the Executive Board of Signa Holding, an Austrian real estate and retail group headquartered in Vienna.[13][14] At the same time, he became Chairman of Signa Retail Holding, the retail division of Signa Holding.[15] In these roles, he is responsible for the strategic development of the group as a whole and the retail business.[16]

Berninghaus is a member of the Advisory Board of the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich.[17] He is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Lindt Chocolate Competence Foundation.[18]
