EtherLambos

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

EtherLambos is a collection of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), based on ERC-721 tokens, deployed on the Ethereum blockchain in March 2018. The EtherLambos development team has thus far remained anonymous.

While EtherLambos received limited attention at the time of their release, renewed interest in early NFT projects led to a sudden increase in buyer interest and sales in August 2021.

Background[edit]

The EtherLambos NFT project began development in 2017 and opened sales in early 2018. EtherLambos were designed to be scarce digital collectible cars that could be modified and traded on the blockchain. EtherLambos were unique among early NFT projects in that they could be modified or "tuned" after purchase. Tuning an EtherLambo requires the owner to spend Ether and results in the modification of the appearance or performance attributes of the car.

Seven different EtherLambo models exist, each with a limited supply. Six models were inspired by a cryptocurrency or cryptocurrency innovator, while one (the "CoinShares model") was developed through corporate partnership. These seven models include the Satoshi (100 total supply; inspired by Satoshi Nakomota), the Vitalik (250 total supply; Vitalik Buterin), the Monera (400 total supply; Monero), the One (300 total supply; NEO (cryptocurrency)), the Charlie (200 total supply; Litecoin), the T-Rex (150 total supply; Tron (cryptocurrency)), and the CoinShares model (200 total supply; commissioned by CoinShares).

EtherLambos were released while CryptoKitties was dominating the NFT market. The EtherLambos Twitter account referenced CryptoKitties in numerous tweets during 2018, suggesting they may have viewed them as their main source of competition at that time.

Media and Celebrity Attention[edit]

EtherLambos received attention from various cryptocurrency news outlets around the time of their release in 2018. They were referred to as “the lastest CryptoKitties copycat” by Bitcoin.com news.[1] BlockPublisher and FullyCrypto reported on the emergence of EtherLambos as a new, modifiable digital collectible, and an alternative to collectible cards and CryptoKitties.[2][3] They also received attention in Chinese and German language media.[4][5]

In April of 2018, it was reported that Etherlambos had partnered with WAX OPSkins to sell the NFTs as luxury crypto collectibles within the OPSkins ecosystem, which would have allowed the cars to be purchased with WAX tokens.[6] However, this appears to never have come to fruition.

Leon Fu of Cryptocurrency.Market predicted in February 2018 that an EtherLambo could one day be worth more than a Lamborghini.[7]  As of August 8, 2021, the highest-priced EtherLambo was purchased on the OpenSea NFT market for 33 Ether, or approximately $106,161 USD.

Canadian actor William Shatner tweeted in June 2018 that he was aware of the EtherLambos project.[8]
