History[edit]
1977 - 2000[edit]
Ethypharm was founded in 1977 [4] opening its first factory in Houdan, France. Ethypharm promptly began to focus on drug delivery and modified release dosage forms, to provide new solutions to facilitate the intake of active pharmaceutical ingredients.
Up until the 2000s, Ethypharm depended exclusively on external partners for the commercialisation of its products. By relying on partnerships, Ethypharm developed its network of associates, thereby enabling it to expand the availability of its products both in Europe and internationally, notably in North America and China [5] (from 1995).
2000s[edit]
At the beginning of the 21st century, many countries passed regulations to encourage the use of generic medicines[6], opening new opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry. Ethypharm developed generic medicines that presented formulation and bioequivalence challenges, such as omeprazole, buprenorphine, fenofibrate and esomeprazole.
From 2010, Ethypharm also started to specialise in specific therapeutic areas where the company already had products in its portfolio: pain stemming from its morphine[7] range and controlled medicine know-how, and addiction based on its buprenorphine range and pipeline product, baclofen[8] for alcohol dependence.
Since 2010[edit]
In 2013, Ethypharm undertook a strategic shift and began selling directly in France through the acquisition of Dexo[9]. The acquisition of DB Ashbourne [10] in 2015 allowed Ethypharm to set a direct foot in the United Kingdom.
In 2015, Ethypharm also registered a new subsidiary in Germany[11], Ethypharm GMBH.
in January 2017 Ethypharm announced the acquisition of Martindale Pharma [12], a UK-based specialty pharmaceutical company specialising in opioid dependence, critical care and injectables.
In April 2021 Ethypharm announced the opening of its Italian subsidiary, a few months before announcing the acquisition of Altan, a Spanish pharmaceutical company, thus entering the Spanish market and establishing a direct commercial presence in the top 5 European markets.
In April 2021, Ethypharm opened a new entity: Ethypharm Digital Therapy[13], following its agreement with GAIA AG for the commercialisation of deprexis©[14].
