Eugene Pook (born 17 April 1972, Ipoh, Malaysia) is an orchestral conductor and clarinetist. He is the founder, conductor and music director of the Selangor Symphony Orchestra,[1] the founder and executive director of the Ipoh Music Festival, and co-founder and music director of PSPA International Ensemble.[2][3]

Pook received his music education at the Royal Conservatory of Music (Canada), University of Missouri–Kansas City (US), and the Eastman School of Music (US) where at the latter he was a double-award recipient.[4][5][6]

Musical career and achievements[edit]

Pook currently holds position of founder and executive director of the Ipoh Music Festival, co-founder and music director of PSPA International Ensemble,[7][8] and has formerly held position as founder, music director & conductor of the Kinta Valley Wind Orchestra,[9] and co-director of the Encounter Training Ensemble of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.[10] He was a former conducting tutor at the University of Malaya and has taught at the British International School Kuala Lumpur.[11]

Pook’s guest appearances with professional orchestras include the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra; Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra; Pleven Philharmonic; and China’s leading orchestras such as the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Henan Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra.[12][13]

Besides serving as a music director and conductor, Pook is also a professional clarinetist who has performed clarinet recitals at prestigious venues such as: the Carnegie Hall (New York City); the Malaysia Embassy (Washington DC, US); and the Delegation of the European Union to the United States (Washington DC, US). He has also performed and toured with the American Wind Symphony, Toronto Philharmonic, Kansas City Philharmonia (US), Northland Symphony Orchestra (US), and Eastman Wind Ensemble (US). Pook was prize-winner of the Concerto-Aria Competition of the University of Missouri–Kansas City (US), which he performed the Clarinet Concerto (Copland) with the UMKC Conservatory Orchestra as well as finalist of the David Maslanka Clarinet Competition at the Eastman School of Music (US).[6][14]

Pook has performed in charity concerts to raise funds for the Alzheimer Disease Foundation Malaysia (2009, 2014), Jeffrey Cheah Foundation (2016, 2015, 2013, 2011), Dementia Society Ipoh (2017), National Stroke Association Malaysia (2018), Make-A-Wish-Malaysia (2016 & 2019), Assunta Palliative Care Center in Petaling Jaya (2014), Perak Palliative Care Society (2014).[12][15][16][17]
