Evila (Japanese: エビラ, Hepburn: Ebira), also known as "The Ultimate Reporter," is an antagonist and boss from the 1999 Sega-published video game, Space Channel 5. She is introduced in the final level, "Evil in the Galaxy Revealed!", and was created by Takashi Yuda. Her name is a cross between "Ulala" and "Evil". Within the fictional universe, Evila was designed to be the ideal reporter, according to Chief Blank — and to mimic and copy Ulala's moves. Although a relatively minor character in the series, Evila is a popular character in the country Japan and as a Sega character in general. Since her debut, Evila has made several cameo appearances in other video games, including the Phantasy Star franchise and Chaos Heroes Online.

Concept and creation[edit]

Evila was one of the last characters created for the 1999 video game, Space Channel 5 — a last-minute addition to the large cast of characters. She was created by Takashi Yuda, who also created several other characters for the game.

Characteristics[edit]

The character is often referred to as "it," but usually as "she."

Appearances[edit]

Space Channel 5[edit]

Evila appears in the final level of Space Channel 5, serving as one of the final bosses. When Ulala, Pudding, and Jaguar make their way up to the first floor, Chief Blank introduces them to Evila, who was created to be the ideal reporter — manipulative and exaggerative. Using the robot for his ratings, he forces her to face off against Ulala in a dance-battle. When Evila starts to lose the battle, she repetitively bangs her head in frustration, resulting in her destruction. When Ulala beats Evila, Blank releases Giant Evila.

Evila, despite self-destructing moments prior, returns at the end of the game and assists Ulala in a march to the end of the galaxy.[1]

Space Channel 5: Part 2[edit]

Although Evila never makes a physical appearance in Space Channel 5: Part 2, she is first seen during the intro-credit scene where Purge watches footage of Ulala defeating Evila in the previous title. Later in the game, when trying to save Space Michael from Shadow, Ulala is joined by four Evila Security Bots — all of which are copies of the original Evila and now wear an orange outfit. The bots were given a "Michael Chip," which keeps them from being hostile.[2]

Other appearances[edit]

Evila appears in a handful of Space Channel 5 spin-off games. She appears in Space Channel 5: Ulala's Cosmic Attack and Dreamcast Collection. Evila was one of the characters used in advertisement for the original game, appearing on solo artwork, box art, and commercials for Space Channel 5.

In 2015, Chaos Heroes Online released character outfits based on those from the Space Channel 5 series. It included the original Evila outfit, and another was based on the Evila Security Bot attire.[3]

Merchandise[edit]

An Evila action figure was released in the early 2000s during the original release of Space Channel 5, created and distributed by Palisades Toys. The figure comes with a mic and base, similar to the other characters.[4]

Reception[edit]

The character has received a generally positive reception among video game journalists, often being compared to Metal Sonic — the robotic clone of Sonic the Hedgehog from another Sega-owned franchise.
