Exit Day of the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union also known simply as Exit Day or Brexit Day is the day which the United Kingdom (which also includes Gibraltar) will formally end its membership of the European Union which will take effect accordance with the outcome of the referendum result from 2016 at 23:00 GMT (00:00 CET) on Friday 31 January 2020 under the provisions of the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 after the previous dates of 29 March 2019, 12 April and 31 October 2019 each passed without the UK leaving the bloc. The withdrawal of the UK from the EU will mark the end of 47 years of membership and participation from within its institutions as one of its leading member states which began back on 1 January 1973 when it first joined along with Denmark and Ireland when it was then known as the European Communities (the Common Market) and also marks the formal end of the Article 50 process which began almost three years earlier when it was first triggered back on 29 March 2017. Implementation Period (Transition period)[edit]

The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU on Exit Day is only the first of a two stage process under the provisions that were agreed under the Withdrawal Agreement the United Kingdom implement a transitional period that will end in December 2020 which until then will leave the UK having to adopt all subsequent EU laws, regulations and directives and will also remain within the EU Customs Union and the EU Single Market and to this effect the UK government will amend the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018 though the European Union (Withdrawal Agreement) Bill 2019-20 which is currently going though Parliament as of late December 2019 to save the effects of the European Communities Act 1972 until the end of this period.

Planned Events[edit]

A series of planned events are planned to take place on 31 January 2020 to mark the occasion and will be announced in due course by the Government and plans have been announced for a party to take place on the night itself which is being organised by Nigel Farage.[2] [3][4]
