FOSSA, Inc. is a US-based private technology company headquartered in San Francisco, CA. [1][2] The company provides both a cloud-based service and on-premises tools to manage open source components used in software development, scan for licenses, and automate compliance.
History
FOSSA was founded in late 2014 by Kevin Wang, a recipient of the Thiel Fellowship. [3] The company grew out of a home-grown project called TLDRLegal, a popular resource that provides software developers plain-English summaries of open source licenses. [4]
The company provides a tool for developers to analyze code automatically to aid developers with open source license management. FOSSA analyzes code, identifies license requirements, and offers fixes when problems are found. [5][6] The product offers over a dozen integrations into languages such as Javascript, Python, Ruby, Golang, as well as workflow, code hosting, and Continuous Integration tools like Slack, JIRA, Artifactory, GitHub, Bitbucket, and more. [7] The company collaborates with prominent open source Silicon Valley lawyers, including Heather Meeker (author of the MPL) and Mark Radcliffe, to add legal intelligence to the tool and provide developers with a means of establishing an automated compliance program within their development workflow.
In July 2016, npm, the software company that maintains the default package manager for Javascript, announced a partnership with FOSSA to launch an integration to their add-ons platform for npm Enterprise. [8] This integration enables third-parties to incorporate license compliance and scanning into workflows that utilize Javascript and npm.
In March 2017, FOSSA announced a $2.2 million seed round led by Salil Deshpande at Bain Capital Ventures, including participation from Marc Benioff, Steve Chen, Jaan Tallinn, Amr Awadallah, and Justin Mateen. [9] Additionally, it launched a cloud-based public beta of its offering, [10] which had been in development at Fortune 500 companies for the past year. [11]
