From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

FOSS United[1][2] is an Indian not-for-profit organization that aims to promote & strengthen the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) ecosystem in India.

FOSS United organizes the annual IndiaFOSS conference, FOSSHack hackathon and monthly meetups and conferences all over the country. The IndiaFOSS 2024 conference[3] featured talks on Software, Hardware, Technology Policy[4], and more and workshops on OpenRefine[5], self-hosting, etc.

History

In January 2020, the IndiaOS conference[6][7][8][9] was jointly organized by ERPNext and Zerodha. After the conference, the existing ERPNext Foundation[10] was subsumed by the new FOSS United Foundation, as a collaboration between ERPNext and Zerodha[11]. Anand Chitipothu joined the Foundation as its first employee. He contributed to the development of the mon.school learning platform before leaving the foundation on March 31, 2022.[12]

FOSS Hack

FOSS United organizes the annual FOSS Hack hackathon. The hackathon is organized in a remote-friendly manner with a few physical locations where participants can hack in-person, e.g. at the SRM Institute of Technology, Chennai[13]. The hackathon participants can create new FOSS projects or they could contribute to FOSS partner projects, like Hoppscotch[14].

OASIS

FOSS United is a founding member of the Open-source Alliance for Social Impact and Sustainability. OASIS is a network of organizations united by the vision that Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) can empower citizen sector organizations and communities to create positive impact at scale. Formed jointly by seven social and tech organizations – FOSS United, ASPIRe, Tech4Good Labs, Tech4Good Community, TinkerHub, and GitHub -- The OASIS alliance was launched last week in Bengaluru at a summit that saw 400 individuals, non-profit organizations, and technologists in attendance.[15]
