Federico De Caroli (born 7 August 1964)[1] is an Italian composer, pianist, music producer and musicologist He is known by the moniker Deca with which he has signed his entire discography[2]

Life and work

A classically trained pianist, he then approached the synthesizer at a young age, producing the first demos inspired by Kosmische musik, the great authors of the electronic genre of the 70s such as Kraftwerk, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre and the technological rock of Pink Floyd.[3]

Graduated in Italian language and literature at the University of Genova, he followed and developed his own personal path of wide-ranging experimentation, basing most of his [[concept albums|concept-albums on dream experience. Mixing tradiional acoustic sounds (piano) with electronic sounds and samples, mediating between innovation and tradition without stylistic foreclosures.[4] He has released over twenty studio albums and has written and produced original music for theater, cinema and television, especially for RAI which is the state-owned Italian broadcasting company.[5]

In his native country he is considered one of the most original and relevant living Italian composers, also by virtue of the oneiric matrix of his inspirations; as attested by the Treccani Encyclopedia.[6]

Among his best known works are Onirodrome Apocalypse, MASS[7] Modulectron[8] and Simbionte, album that the Italian-American music critic Piero Scaruffi has included among the greatest ambient records of all time.[9]

He has also released five albums with his industrial music side-project called Argiope.[10][11]

He participated in the production of the soundtrack of the film Robert Irwin: a desert of pure feeling in competition at the New York DOC Film Festival in 2022[12], together with Ennio Morricone and Hans-Joachim Roedelius.

He is currently part of the team of authors and composers of APM Music in Hollywood.[13]

Alongside his activity as a musician, he is also a music journalist for the independent magazine In Your Eyes, for which he has interviewed famous artists such as Lol Tolhurst, Brian James, Ronny Moorings, Gitane DeMone.[14][15]
