Felix Milbank is president and founder of ‘Students for the EU’[1] and a vocal anti-Brexit campaigner, working closely with A. C. Grayling, Alastair Campbell and Mark Drakeford. Milbank also commissioned the release of The Young European Newspaper, which was first sold to the public on the 24th of March 2017.
Milbank is a member of the European Youth Parliament to which he spent four days in Liverpool, back in 2015, debating and forming resolution on the then current Political climate of the European Union. Felix is also a public Speaker with Oxford Union.
Personal life[edit]
Felix Milbank was born on 15 June 1999 in Bristol and attended Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf in Cardiff, Wales. Felix has four siblings, 3 of which are triplets. He's also fluent in English and Welsh, and currently learning Russian and German. After his A level exams he will be taking a gap year to which he will travel around Europe for a few weeks with friends. Following that, Mr Milbank has confirmed that he will then spend the majority of his gap year working on 'Students For The EU' and 'The Young European' newspaper whilst also assisting other political organisations. He Following his gap year he hopes to Study International relations and Global politics with Philosophy. He has yet to apply but intends to do so with in his gap year.
Politics[edit]
In 2015 Mr Milbank founded 'The Young Conservative Party For Cardiff' with the intention of promoting Liberalism views amongst young people. One year later in an act of defiance against the party as a result of the EU referendum he shut the movement down by also removing all social media accounts and shutting Conservative Party (UK) workers out of communications. Milbank later went on to join the Liberal Democrats, but still firmely believes that a new party has to be established in order to reform the current political system. In an interview with Wales Online about votes at 16, Felix said: "We do contribute towards society and so we should have a say on how it’s run. If we have no right to vote, we shouldn’t have to pay taxes or be able to leave home legally or get married. We are happy that we have that kind of freedom, but you have to meet us in the middle somewhere."[2]
Milbank is currently taking part in the filming of a documentary about the 48% (a term to describe those that voted to remain in the Euopean Union) directed by Chairman & Founder of Guerilla Films ltd, David Wilkinson. Milbank has expressed an interest in running for Parliament in the 2020 General election but has yet to confirm which Political Party he'll run for.
On the 25th of March Felix was headlined as a key speaker for one of the largest pro European protests to ever of been held in London. The march, which started outside the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, finished on Parliament Square where over 100,000 people gathered to listen to Tim Farron, Alastair Campbell and Felix Milbank. Many of the supporters had travelled from Germany, France, Belgium and Gibraltar.
Milbank is well know by Pro European Organisations and is highly regarded for his public speaking. He has recently been invited to by FullCircle to deliver talks in Brussels, however this has yet to be confirmed.
On the 4th of February 2017[3], Milbank was delivering a speech outside 10 Downing Street at an Open Britain rally which led to Peter French inviting him to speak at the Unite For Europe march in London, on the 25th of March. Peter French, the original organiser for the Unite For Europe march, had intended on giving Milbank and other young people a more prominent role on the day of the march, but after a scandal in the movement which resulted in Peter French standing down as organiser but not for any wrongdoing, new organisers restricted grassroots campaigners from playing a key role on the day. Previously told to prepare a 10-minute speech, Milbank was told to reduce it to 3 minutes due to organiser running 30 minutes behind schedule. In footage of his speech you can see Milbank holding several pages of pre-prepared material but only making reference to a handful of points this is due to last minute changes of timing on the day. Since the march Mr Milbank has confirmed to work with Peter French and other Political organisations to promote a more Liberal scene in UK Politics.
On the 27th June 2016, Milbank organised his first march under 'Students For The EU's' name. The march, which started at the Aneurin Bevan Statue in the City of Cardiff went to the National Assembly for Wales in Cardiff Bay in protest against the result of the IN-OUT European Referendum held on the 23rd of June 2016. Estimated numbers by the media suggest around 300-500 students marched whilst also gaining support from National Assembly for Wales members Julie Morgan for Cardiff North, Mark Drakeford and Jane Hutt the Minister for Finance (Wales).
Students For The EU[edit]
In March 2016, Felix Milbank founded 'Students For The EU' and is currently President of the organisation. Its aim is to fight Brexit and to campaign for the voting age to be lowered to 16 years of age.
Whilst pro European/ United States of Europe, Students For The EU is pro reform of the current Union and hopes to play a key part in securing the interests of young people if a reform were to happen.
Students For The EU released a 3-point objective in march and with it a Crowdfunder to support it. It currently has the backing of A. C. Grayling, with him being one of the first to pledge to the organisation. Natalie_Bennett , former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales, has also shown support for Students For The EU and The Young European newspaper via Twitter, though Bennett has not officially endorsed the movement.
